When I had my Saturn in Canada back in 1993, I did my first DIY oil change with a Saturn factory filter, which is made by Fram. I'd like to know who is making the factory filter for Saturn now.

For the s-series (3614), still Fram.

AC Delco is a brand not a manufacture.

The are the suppliers I know about in order of quanity:

1. Champion

2. Delphi

3. Mann

4. Fram (Mexican?)

5. Mexican - Manufacture Unspecified (Fram?)

Back when I first bought my Saturn, I remember having a conversation with a Saturn tech at the Chicago Auto Show. As an example of how Saturn was "different" from other GMs, he pointed out how Saturn refused to go with AC Delco for the oil filter despite pressure from GM. He said that AC Delco wouldn't meet the specs they wanted, so they went with someone else.

It sounded good back then, but a few more years has given me the wisdom to see this is probably a pile of crap.

I think he was right in the fact that GM(not just saturn) tried hard to differentiate the Saturn Brand. They used a unique platform, engine and even a non GM transmission.(almost unheard of in 1990)

However, I doubt an AC filter failed to meet their "specs".

If its a 3614 and you can fit a bit extra length, a fram 3600 (taurus) size filter such as a motorcraft FL-400S will be a great choice for only $2.77 at walmart.

My dad worked in GM purchasing for 35 years. The way they work is "the best quality available for the price we (GM) are willing to pay." That pricepoint is usually pretty tight, but they won't knowingly give you a piece of crap, either. Failures on this type of part can get very expensive if they're forced to do a recall.

Yes the V6 engine and trans in the 04 Saturn Vue is essentially the same engine & trans as the Honda Odyssey minivan and Pilot SUV. GM swaps with Honda for OnStar for their US cars and Opel diesel engines for European Hondas.

To the best of my knowledge, Honda doesn't use anybody's Diesel but their own, developed in-house after they rejected several others (including Isuzus and Opels). Now, that might be just the new Accord Diesel but as far as I know that's the only Diesel Honda as yet.

Can anybody confirm or deny that Honda uses Opel diesels?

Incidentally, the new Accord Diesel pulls just 3000 rpm at 100 mph, 250 ft-lbs at 2000, and it's just 2.2L.

Thanks! Those links say it all!
(For those that don't want to go to the links, or if they are dead when you read this, the short version is that the 1.7L used in the Civic is of Isuzu manufacture but is a new design, and is used exclusively in the Civic. They didn't say if the design was Honda or Isuzu (probably the latter). The 2.2L is of Honda design and manufacture and will show up initially in the Accord, but also in other vehicles. The articles also stated that the Isuzu deal is part of the deal that has Honda supplying V6 engines to GM (like for the Saturn VUE).
