some spots don't allow left turns, because of the danger of head-ons, and because they block traffic. I wish the roads here were arranged better to allow right turn only driving. Instead, they put one ways in the wrong direction to discourage any sort of navigation other than in straight lines.
A few years back I did mental status examinations of patients who were admitted to a long term neurological rehabilitation unit. Many got there due to surviving either motor vehicle accidents or unsuccessful suicide attempts. Life expectancy after catastrophic head injuries can be quite long. Think wheelchairs, feeding tubes, ventilators, catheters, etc. There may be worse fates than death. When leaving the facility I would always double check my seat belt. My condolences.
I hear the "I don't wear my seat belt because I don't want to get trapped in the car" excuse a lot. That has to be one of the dumbest excuses possible.If a person is "trapped" and can't perform the simple action of pushing the release button then what makes them think they can perform the similarly simple act of opening the door? Or performing the more complex task of getting a knife from their glove box or pocket, opening it, cutting the seat belt and then opening the door.
Sadly, the belief in this ignorant myth has cost a lot of people their lives.

I've always worn belts since I started driving in 1976, long before Nanny Government began shaking its finger at us and threatening us with no supper if we didn't wear them. In fact I don't feel comfortable without one on, riding or driving.
The so-called wisdom when I was a kid was, "I don't like wearin' no seat belt. In a crash I c'n be thrown clear."
My answer: "Yeah, and you could land on your head, too."

I should have said "most ignorant" instead of "dumbest". I have dealt with people in enforcement contacts and also when speaking at civic meetings and schools that actually believe it. But when I ask them if they aren't physically capable of releasing the belt what makes them think they are capable of opening the door or getting out a knife and cutting the belt and then opening the door I can see the light go on occassionally.
Some people actually admit that they never thought of it that way, and I've been thanked on a few occassions for taking the time to explain it that way.

Bringing up topic as a reminder.
My previous car, hydroplaned last summer.Spinned,hit concrete wall(overpass,had big waterspot),hit buddy's car in back wheel and bumper,spinned to other side and hit about 20 poles that are holding metal wire to prevent flying on incoming side. Speed around 85,my fault for speed,got one front tire messed up week before,got used tire that didn't match. Driver side airbag didn't deploy, passenger side did. I drove alone,I always have my seatbelt on. Walked out without a scratch. wear your seatbelt,please!

What I`ve always wondered,why is it a law to wear a seatbelt in a car,but you can ride a motorcycle with no helmet?
Because people are really, really, really stupid to not wear a helmet when they ride a bike.

The dumbest thing I see around here are the crotch rocket idiots with a helmet attached to their bike on some kind of helmet holder, while they're racing through traffic. It's almost like they're saying f-you!

Sorry about your friend. I use to work with a fellow who was involved in emergency rescue. He said something that stuck with me. "They never had to cut a dead person free of a seatbelt."
