Right.

Not saying I don't wear a seatbelt, but not too into Gov't mandating these things, because what'll be next - you'll have to wear helmets in the car?

How about a breast plate? Then years later, (just like when seat belts came in) people will say the same thing about wearing the helmet & breast plate?

Or, shoulder pads & knee pads on a motorcycle. Same thing.

Then, once we're on that slope, where does the mandate stop? It doesn't - that's the problem.

I am no expert but there seems to be a lot of controversy over wwearing a helmet on a motorcycle. Some say they can hurt as much as help by causing severe neck injuries and compounding impact injuries. that is why it has been a hot topic for decades.
Personally I used to always waear one but it was also the law in MI.

I'm all for buckling up and wearing a helmet. I just don't like someone FORCING me to do it by adding a law with fines and penalties if I decide not to.

The way I understand it though in Florida they ended up pushing the helmets laws because the motorcycle riders wouldn't carry more than the absolute min and then when they were hurt the state ended up having to foot the bill. Got pretty expensive since some of the time it was a lifetime of care. So I would say that people don't want the nanny state until it comes to having them taking care of them when they have a accident. For me it just seemed like common sense to wear a helmet and a least try to protect the most vital part of the body.
