Bought 1 of these the other day and noticed something very odd. At least I've never seen anything like it.
Usually when looking in a filter with a bypass in it you can see the bypass valve seated at the bottom of the filter. I'm assuming that's the bypass valve anyway. On this particular filter it's up to approximately 3/4" from the return hole. Couldn't budge it with my little finger nor 40 lbs of pressure from the handle of a set of pliers. I'm not going to use it but am really curious.??? Purolators 1-800# is useless.

It's probably some kind of "anti-siphon" valve. If you're not going to use it then cut it open and see what prize is inside.

Thread end bypass rather than dome end?
A lot more area so would be a lot stronger spring.
It looks like the bypass rating was almost double what the PL20195 was as well.

May never hit that bypass psi because media tear probably happens prior to that.
 
I think that's a thread-end bypass. I know some of the filters I've used in a Ford Escort ZX2 had what appeared to be a bypass very close to the threads when looking into the outlet hole.

I have a cut open pic of a different Purolator filter with the same valve. You couldn't push it with your finger because it doesn't move in that direction. There's a small spring in there also.

This filter is the L30165 with two bypass valves and a 25-35 psi rating IIRC.

That's it 6starprez. If the filter portion on the right was flipped over I'm looking at those 3 pleats upward. I've been finding more info on this filter but am still pretty much in the dark on this thread-end bypass. I know it bypasses at 8-12 psi, but is there any benefit (or draw back) to the thread-end bypass? It will be mounted horizontally.

That PL25230 probably has a bypass in the dome end as well but at only 8-12 psi. Same setup, weaker spring perhaps. Since your filter is horizontal, the bypass valve location (thread-end vs dome-end) doesn't really matter IMO.

That other valve is not a threaded end bypass valve ... that's already in the other end cap. That valve is an "anti-siphon" valve so the center tube doesn't drain out. Think of it as an ADBV for the center tube.
 
As illustrated in the pics, this application has two adbv's, some prefer to call the one located in the centertube and anti-siphon valve. The idea is similar/same though, an extra valve in the center tube to keep oil inside the the filter rather than escaping or draining to the outlet hole. In other words, like an adbv it's a one way check valve keeping oil in the filter on shut down.

Some applications, I suspect because of being very susceptible to a start up rattle, spec the extra check valve in the center tube.

Fyi, this is not unique to Purolator, this is vehicle application specific spec which all filter manufacturers would use and in fact has been posted here on a Fram orange can in the past.

I would like to use this on a Harley twin cam (horizontal mount). It's 1.7" longer than stock. I like what I'm hearing about this filter, seems like it will keep oil available for the lifters after shut downs. I'm also thinking the substantial increase in media will decrease some bypassing (that & cooling is why I'm setting up for the longer filter). I guess there might be concern over that thread-end bypass opening while mounted horizontally though.
Any thoughts on this application would be appreciated!
If it's relevant, I'm running a larger then stock pump, more volume, more scavenging and a little higher pressure.

You mean the anti-siphon/center tube ADBV? There is no "thread-end bypass" valve as already discussed. The real filter bypass valve is in the dome end on this filter per the photos.

The horizontal orientation of this filter wouldn't matter anyway.
