PL14610 and Mann ML1014 cut open---no tears

My first time posting oil filter photos, so go easy on me.

1. Purolator PL14610 from 2007 Honda Ridgeline, 5397 miles, 76 Super syn blend 5w-20. No tears in the media but some wavy gapping. Manufacturing code is F09D21E2, made in Fayetteville on 09/21/12.

2. Mann ML1014 from 2010 Nissan Frontier, 4960 miles, Quaker State Conventional 5w30. No tears in the media, but not very impressive.

Hmmm. I run my 14610's 10k miles usually. Wonder if half that would show conclusive evidence.

The short one is a Briggs and Stratton 492932. Not sure who makes it for them.

Isn't it funny how members are all over a post that shows a Purolator filter with tears, but hardly a blink at a post when one has no defects?

Just human nature. People don't care about normalcy, only when things are not right. People should get excited about media failures, as it's not supposed to be happening. Having a filter that does it's job and doesn't fail is supposed to happen.

True that Norm. I've used and posted as many or more dissected PL14610's and variants like AAP Total Grip on Bitog as anyone here and never had an issue, ie.,tear. Perhaps I've been lucky, all have been on Honda Accords or Civics and substantial ocis, ~5k to 7800k mi ( (posted here) . I'm dying to see the current PL14610 I have on my Accord but I will not pull it early, 10-15%MM oci., 6500-6800 miles. But, good or bad I will post it. Your PL14610 result looks very similar to what I've posted in the past, no issues.

But as mentioned it's human nature to focus on out of the norm. There's a saying, everyone loves a good train wreck.

No sir, no oddities in this. A filter used within normal service limits displaying torn media is a complete failure, and deserves attention until problem is rectified. No one would use this filter, if it was explained that part way through the service interval the media might tear and oil bypass through.

Are you kidding me? There have been so many tear threads I've quit posting on them too.

But it is also an aside of human nature, studies have proven over and over again a satisfied customer will say something to perhaps 1 person and an displeased one will tell 6 or 7.

Agreed.

If a Purolator filter had been used in 3-4 OCI's of 10k each for a total of 30-40k miles without tear, then everybody will praise that.

If a filter of any brand has defective(s) in less than 10k miles then I will stay away from it, and will complain loudly.

If a filter has no defect(s) in 10k miles then it's normal and nothing to talk about.

Well, no defects should be the status quo, right? I'm anxiously awaiting the day when this tear issue is a distant memory.

Me too it's kinda dominated the board lately, understandably so, but we've pretty much beat it to death. Puro has a problem and the ball is in their court.
