Hi,
Would this be harmful if the oil drain was left off, then after the soak a few quarts of oill was poured to flush Chem-Dip from bottom of oil pan. I would follow this by adding oil starting vehicle and then an immediate oil change. I would also would remove remaining Chem-Dip from tops of pistons and add a bit of oil to pistons before starting

I've tried Chemtool already with some benefit. The car - 97 Saturn has compression within spec.

I guess I was wondering how much harmful Chem-Dip could be than Chemtool for a piston soak. I am considering doing this soak for a week and as a last resort to a re-ring

Berrymans Chem-dip

As a last resort to a re ring, this may help.
It sounds like you are careful and conscientious.
But if you are going to do it, give it a chance.
Give it enough time. Wiggle or rotate the engine a bit.

The more i think about it the better it sounds,an inline will distribute the liquid around the whole ring area.
Over the course of a week it may well clean the rings real well,i would say its important to keep liquid in the cylinder as it will leak down, you may need to add a little every day.

Turning the engine slightly periodically by hand as mechtech says will help.

I wouldn't go near Chem-Dip, shoot we can't get the original formulation in Cali. Chem-Dip will DESTROY ANYTHING PLASTIC, RUBBER, OR SOFT. Meaning anything made of plastic, rubber, or any other polymer/elastomer will turn into goo. Unless the parts are made out of nylon, Viton, or other chemical-resistant materials.

I would just get some GM TEC/ValvTec Marine Motor De-Carb and spray a good dose into each cylinder and let it soak. Repeat a few times.

I guess it's not to much work to remove the oil pan so I will do this during the soak to eliminate Chem-Dip in th oil.

Well, I went ahead and did the Chem-Dip soak for 5 days - one gallon of it. A "complete" failure as dipstick is almost half down after 100 miles.

I also used the Chem-Dip with Methylene Chloride, the strong one not the California compliant one.

The only benefit of the soak is all my valve train clatter is gone and my engine sounds rock solid now.

I have been tempted to use it with the oil pan off too as a last resort to address piston ring land coking on an old diesel (will have to rebuild it anyway ).

I ended up re-ringing the engine. The Chem-Dip did seem to have cleaned the pistons and the rings moved freely upon disassembly.
Here is a photo of a piston how it came out of the engine.

The engine does not consume any oil at all anymore so all the work for the re-ring was worth it. Now I can use a quality oil instead of always looking for cheap oil.
