I have what sounds like piston slap at around 1000 to 1500 rpms. It is louder when the engine is cold but is still very much audible when warm, but only at these rpms. I know piston slap is the deformation of the piston or shaft but could an oil filter with a low flow cause it to be louder? I am running a Purolator Pureone..

A pureone caused a lot more noise on my car when cold. Installing an OEM filter returned it to normal.

I have 3 more Pureones, I won't be using them. Bought 10 OEM filters on eBay.

OP - Need to know engine, lubricant, cold start temps. You have to balance flow and efficency. I wouldnt run a pureone with higher viscosity lubricants in a cold winter. The filter should bypass, though, at moderate psid of ~10.

That car has the KA24E or KA24DE engine. First suspicion with a noise like this, and on the KA-series engine, is a timing chain tensioner/guide problem. Many timing chain systems are robust and out-last the engine. The system on this engine is not one of them.

It may well be something other than piston slap.

So very true. At least a half dozen people who have reported their car or truck to me as a slapper were completely wrong.

What oil were you using? I have QSHM 5w30 in there now but will be switching to QS Defy tomorrow which is a synthetic blend..hoping it will flow easier.

What did it turn out to be most of the time; rod knock, carbon knock, wrist pin play, etc.???

Most common is carbon knock. In a GM V8 it sounds almost exactly like slap, and it too goes away quickly. But a true slapper will slap a bit as it returns to idle from a slight rev in neutral. Carbon knock won't.

I've had folks with a bad lifter and a broken rocker arm try and tell me it was just piston slap! And we all know valve gear is 1/2 crank speed.
