Piston slap K24 Accord

Hey guys, in the last 6 months or so ive noticed my accord (2.4) is piston slapping every morning and every start after the temp gauge goes down to C. Its worse when cold. Is this anything that would effect reliability now or long term??? I always let the oil circulate before driving off. And i take it easy on her (3000 rpm or less) until the temp gauge is in the middle. Anything to worry about? Its probably done it since i got it...maybe...just never noticed it.

Nope...already done! Its definetely piston slap. Only happens when car isnt warmed up (mainly the first morning start) and it goes away after 5-10 minutes of driving.

sounds JUST like this...its that slapping/light knocking noise, i hear it best when im right in front of the engine...seems like it comes from the middle. not the top end, but not underneath the car either. could be a carbon buildup also it is sometimes hard to tell the differance even with a trained ear. i sometimes have a hard time if im just listening without any further tests. We see a lot of engines that dont need rebuilds and sound like they are going to throw a rod
 
If it is, in fact, piston slap - there is no harm. many engines have continued to run many tens of thousands of miles with piston slap. I've had a few - primarily domestic four cylinders, but I have certainly heard of it across many brands.
 
yeah i need it to last another 50,000 miles AT LEAST!!! i bought it used and ill have it paid off in 5 years (college student and part time job on the weekends)

It shouldnt be carbon build up...I throw in a bottle of techron before each oil change.
 
You need an oil that will actually stay on the cylinder walls to give those piston skirts something to ride against on start up. I imagine with that 5W-20 you got in there, those cylinder walls are dry as a bone after shutting the engine down for 20 minutes.
 
I can't speak to Hondas, but in GM engines piston slap is an annoyance only. BUT it is many times mis-diagnosed, you must be certain it is not something else like carbon knock or valve gear noises, etc.

We have had many a 'slapper' in our fleet and the facts are in! It has no effect on engine life at all. Our oldest van has almost half a million miles on the original engine and has slapped since purchased new. Does not burn or leak oil.

You imagine? I agree.

What about 5 seconds after it starts? Like my Honda, this sound lasts until it is warmed up. Are you suggesting that there's no oil on the wall for 5, 10 minutes?

Yup, Mentioned this before, that "cold slap" sound is classic to Honda Automotive 4 cylinders. Every Honda 4 I've owned has done this, MOST that I've worked on had some measurable cold slap. It's prevalent on the B, H, F series, and the K is no exception. Always chalked it up to the silicon content/mettalurgy of their pistons and undersquare internal geometry. While it can get loud sometimes, I have never seen evidence of it affecting the engine's life. High moly oil can help quiet it down.
 
My 02 has it as well. When I got the car I thought it was the valves. Adjusted those and nothing changed. Shell T5 seemed to help some. Running Defy 5w20 right now and it's not too bad. Still there just better.

Typical Honda.

Five year payment plan on a 2006 car which is already 2013? Please don't say you will done paying for in 2018!!

Was thinking the same, plus it has over 100K miles already, it'll probably make 200k. Just can't imagine financing a used car with 100k on it.

Like I said, I am a college student PAYING for college MYSELF, and only work a part time job 3 days per week. It was either this or keep repairing my 95 accord with 225,000 miles on it.
 
I have no idea what your payment plan is but I am having hard time believing that if you add up all the payments, it would have cost you about the same to keep the 95 Accord on the road (provided it was not committing suicide by rust).

I am guessing you are paying $300 per month to the used car dealer for financing and I think I am on the low side. Would I be offending you if I guess you are paying him on weekly plan aka *only* $75 per week or even better *ONLY* $7.50 per day which is even less than a lunch at McDonald :-)

Taking the $300 figure that comes to $3,600 per year which translates to $18,000 over five year period!!

Please prove me wrong and tell me that you are paying under $100 per month.

By the way, you brought up the subject of monthly payments. You can back out of this discussion by not confirming any of my numbers. I will not badger you.
