I am thinking about buying a GMC Yukon XL because I need more room. The price on these vehicles seem very good right now. Anyone have a Yukon XL or similar type of vehilce? I am think of buing a 2003 or 2004 Yukon XL with a 5.3 liter engine.

if you buy one, you will want to slap yourself for buying a poorly engineered and built vehicle.

I have a 2005 Silverado and a 2005 Tahoe.

Silverado: 1500 LS Crew Cab Short Bed 4X4
5.3L 4L60E Auto
17,500 miles

Tahoe: 2WD LS 4.8L 4L60E Auto
11,500 miles

No piston slap in either one. I use the OLM in both and have about 500 miles on the Tahoe and about 6200 on the Silvy; Castrol GTX 5w30.

IMO they are well engineered and well built. They have their annoyances (clunking in drivetrain on Silvy/nothing yet on the Tahoe) So far they've been a good purchase.

Supposedly the piston slap has been engineered out of the latest versions of the Vortec engines.

My 2004 Silverado seems to be holding up okay. Intermediate steering shaft replaced for free, a common problem awaiting an engineering fix but is an annoyance vice a safety problem.

I would seriously consider fuel costs. If more problems break out in the mideast and/or Venezuela gets mad at us expect fuel costs to soar; 5 bucks or more per gallon a distinct possibility. Gas guzzlers may become unaffordable and resale value will plummet.

Think long and hard about operating costs versus hauling ability (onboard room).

I currently have a minivan and I need more room for cargo on trips. I have two other cars (honda Civic and a Toyota Camry) that we for work. The Yukon XL will just be for family trips. For this reason gas usage is not a major factor. I am happy to hear that there people with high mileage and the vehicle is running strong. Also, due to the gas prices the deals on Yukon XL are very good right now.
