Pirelli Scorpion AS PLUS 3 225/60r18 Review

? Can you provide what you meant? a link to another tire I didnt buy with no commentary is hard to see your point or intention.

This thread was initially a review of the pirellis but it seems to have turned into what tire I should have bought thread :giggle:.

Sorry for some reason I thought you went with the LX25s instead of the dws06, so that's why I searched that tire up instead. I might have mixed this thread with a different thread where the op bought LX25s. I have nothing against the dws06s, they're great tires.

LX25 was my org. second choice they were 180 something at sams club for a price match in my size.
They are mentioned in almost every tire thread for good reason.
So far been 100% happy with the dws06 plus.

I have General as-05's on the elantra.. Now I need to decide If I'm going as-07 or something slightly milder.

The pirellis had an unbeatable deal at 156$ per tire + 20 mount. They might have gotten better but I didnt keep them long enough to find out. I would consider them again in the future.. when the road was good.. they were great... note OHIO has crap roads ... some places are like 3rd world countries... E. Liverpool etc.

@Rand - any newer updates on the DWS-06+? They are on my shorter list of future replacements as well as the AS3 and couple others.

I try to follow the threads with the Pirelli AS3. I'm currently running the AS2+ on my Accord (215-55-17) but down to 5/32". I bought them for the lack of noise reviews as well as overall dry/wet. I run full winter like many so no concerns for that season. They replaced a set of original GY WeatherReady that were very noisy and I thought harsh but thought maybe it was the Accord since it was new to me. When I put my used 6-7/32" Conti WinterContact Si the reduced noise and improved ride was like . The AS2+ in spring made that even better.

Watching the TR tests on the AS3 left me a little down on them as compared to the group and looking more at the GY WR2 possibly. Then I watched the UHPAS tests and the DWS-06+ looks good, tThe P-zero AS3 even better but I would need to go 225-50-17 which I'm fine with. Many of my roads are pretty poor so that round over impacts thing is a trait I like a lot.

From my experience over decades I prefer asymmetrical 3 season so I can cross rotate. I always seem to get more "quiet" miles when I can even out that no matter how good my alignment is. That is compared to a couple directional 3 season and all my directional winters.

As much as I want nice handling, I need quiet highway that tracks straight, good in wet. My daily is just over 50 miles round trip, mix 60/40 highway at 65-80mph with traffic and local 40mph. My son is moving 8 hours away in a couple weeks so guaranteed to get a bunch more highway miles from NY to VA.

Sadly as I get older, that quiet controlled highway is definitely higher on the spectrum vs the true sport.

I need a test with the DWS-06+, P Zero AS3, GY WR2, Regular AS3, CC2 but some other asymmetrical versions also. I don't have a DT by me so that 30 day swap out is more difficult. Sam's/BJ's/Costco and local tire store are my real options. TR does have my local tire store listed as a recommended installer.

I'm going to write up a review after a thousand miles. So far I'm loving them. Everything but the MPG. Which was expected. I also haven't had any kind of road trip to get a good gauge on how much it's went down. I'd estimate roughly 6-8% but that's pretty much a guess at this point.

This is the third season on DWS06+.
Performance and wear-wise, they are exceptional tires, especially in the rain. You can cross-rotate them.
Only downside, and this is pure performance issue for me, it is that it likes higher pressure due to softer sidewalls. They are very compliant, comfortable tires, but for better turns (and when I say turn, those that make tires scream) they like 3-4psi more.
Performance-wise, it will be hard to find a better AS tire than DWS06+ or Pilot A/S4. They are better than the majority of summer tires, but still keep high performance on cold days.
IDK how they perform in snow as I run snow tires.

I had these put on last tues 3/11 Drove with them to Cincinnati and back about 600miles..
DT installed.. had an issue I threw a wheel weight.. on the trip (aprox 25miles after they were mounted)
Car was shaking so bad the seatbelt was giving me an upset stomach
Stopped at DT in Columbus they were severely understaffed took 2.75hours to get rebalanced..
but in their defense they were professional and capable.

The good
Smooth quiet ride when the road is good.
MPG was outstanding slightly better than OE yokohama avid gt (which was already good)
I hit 30+mpg with the turbo outback going mid 70's
Would have been even higher at 65mph
Tires had a huge rim protector hard to see in photos how big the tires stick out around wheel to protect it but its about thumb width.(massive)
If you look at the 9 o'clock position on the picture below its easier to see it there.

Traction was good.. improvement over OE tires esp in the dry.. wet was also superior but not as noticeable.(2" of rain on road trip)
Steering on the grooved roads (where grooves run in same direction as road) was ok.. didnt pull you side to side like some tires I've had.

The bad:
When road was bad ride was poor.
Little bumps felt like fred flintstone tires (concrete) WHAM! and impact noise was loud. No give to the bump no "rounding it"
Bigger bumps were also felt considerably more than OE tires even moderate expansion joint humps were jarring.
Handling was fairly light steering ok but just ok. Turn in was ok, but lane holding in a crosswind was not an improvement over the OE tires(poor)

Tires were loud on anything besides good pavement.
Ground surface (where they remove road paint in construction) was obnoxiously loud.

I'll try to explain a little more:
On construction zones where pavement was patched or slightly uneven (they expanded a shoulder to make a lane etc)

the car was very floaty and unsettled. When pavement wasnt perfect it was like the tires were very hard with no give..
when pavement had bigger imperfections they had too much bounce and float.

So to me they felt like all the bad parts of a UHP tire with none of the good.. This may be an artifact to this tire size.. on this car..

after 800 miles I decided to exercise my DT rights 😂

So What did I replace them with:
I was going to go Conti LX25.
but decided to go with Continental dws06 plus.

Now for bonus time I will compare my initial feeling on these DWS06+ vs the pirellis

The dws06 are firm.. but compared to the pirellis they round over the smaller bumps better.. still abit firmer than OE tires.
Dws06 on bigger bumps ABSORB some of the impact and dont get floaty/wobbly over road imperfections.
They arent overly harsh which I was afraid of.. They also seem well controlled by the suspension in a good way.
Steering is much improved esp. in crosswinds. vs OE but not edgy(which is good)
So far I'm very happy with the dws06+ I'll write their own review after 30days/1000miles or so.

I may be back to make some edits for clarity and spelling. 😂

Here is a yokohama AVID GT tire pic
