Pics from inside a 2016 Subaru FB25 with 89k miles

These pictures are from last year when I swapped a FB25 from a wrecked 2016 Forester into my 2011 Forester. I tore the engine down and did a reseal before installing it. The only things I didn’t reseal were the head gaskets and lower oil pan. Unknown oil history, but this thing is very clean in my opinion.

Why did the 2011 need an engine swap?

The original engine was one of the early FB25s that suffered from excessive oil consumption. By 153k miles it was running on 30 psi compression in at least one cylinder (with a persistent misfire in two cylinders) and using a quart of oil every 800 miles.

Any chance you tore the 2011 engine down a bit? I'd be curious to see how it looks even in the condition it was in. Perhaps a clean engine but the cylinders/rings were just toast resulting in poor compression and oil burning?

The original 2011 engine is sitting in my garage for a tear down project someday… when it happens I will post a thread for it.

I suspect it was more than just stuck rings because those early FB series engines consumed a lot of oil right from the factory in most cases. It was more a defective ring issue to my understanding.
