As I've written before, every 6 mos to a year I get this urge for a pickup truck. Since all used pickups, here in NE TX, are made of silver, gold, diamonds & rubies, so far I've found nothing that 1. I'd be interested in, and 2. Affordable! Short of visiting Bill in Utah & getting him to find me somethng, I'm stuck with whatevr I can find around here. I can only drool
at some of the used p/u deals posted here on BITOG.
But as for me finding nothing? That may have changed today. Found a 97 Dodge Dakota Sport, ext cab. Color is a light, semi-turquoise green- if you know the correct name for it please speak up. Owner has done nothing to spiff it up, exterior is dirty & interior is dirtier. Has one broken tail-light, and the "cup in the door" door handle on drivers door has the "cup" broken out. Several old cigarette burns in the passenger seat. Powertrain: 3.9 L V6, w/5-sp manual trans. Has cold factory AC & OEM CD player. Odo: ~185,000 miles!
Previous owner(widow, her late husbands truck) had 4 mismatched tires on it, and ruined the clutch. I'm now dealing with the next owner, who has owned & driven it for a while.
I know, run like H***, right? BUT: Body is almost perfectly straight, except for: minor crease just behind the LR wheel; one small dent in the inside top rim of the bed, LF; and a crack in front plastic grille piece. Bed is lightly skinned up- used, but not abused or damaged. Engine is *much* cleaner than it should be, considering the rest of the truck- owner thinks it may be a replacement, he may be right. I drove it, and it runs *Strong*, shows no evidence of oil leaks or burning, and idles smoother my 94 Dakota(bought new)3.9 ATX ever did. Has a frame-mount hitch receiver.
It also has a good set of 4 matching tires, exc tread & should last me a couple of years at least. All-new clutch. When asked about gas mileage, he thought a minute & answered 21 mpg, so he's at least honest about that. It drove well enough, maybe a little pull to the left. He said he mght get the toe-in set for free by the folks he bought the tires from. And a new tailight is already ordered & on the way.
It should clean up pretty good- though I am worried about the ceiling!(How did the ceiling get so dirty?
) And I can live with the cigarette burns.
First asking price: $3300. If it was cleaned up, that would be pretty doggone good here in ETX. If I can get him to $2500 or less, will probably get it. Heck, it'll give me something to use up all that stockpiled 10w30 motor oil!
So- considering that pickups sell high as a kite in my area, what do you think?
