Is this unreasonable?

We found a GSD breeder who was recommended by a lady who trains LEO canines. The price wasn’t an issue to me, but she wouldn’t let us pick out the dog. It was my understanding that she’d be more willing to work with us if she picked the gender too “because she will have worked with them and know their personalities.” The breeder wanted to name the dog too. She wanted $500 down and supposedly already had 4 deposits. Say we wanted a male, but they were sold out.. We’d be out the $500 too.

To say the least, we are looking elsewhere. Are we being unreasonable?

No, she's the one being unreasonable. Too bad about the deposit. I'd shop somewhere else.

There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to pick out a dog.

Also, if the understanding was you'd have choice, I'd sue her for my money back if she didn't want to give it.

As an AKC breeder of working dogs ( the other half actually, its her thing), I feel this breeder is totally out of line and being the unreasonable one.

Dogs and people don't need a matchmaker, they have been effectively bonding for eons.

I mean it seems unreasonable. But I can't speak to what the market looks like.
Is she better than other breeders? Cheaper? Better trainer? Would have to weigh all other aspects to determine if I wanted to put up with that.
Dog business is booming, so she can do whatever she wants and still do well.

I look at the eyes ,duh eyes equals duh dog and a being able to watch the pups behavior with the rest of the pups tells me if the dog is passive, doesn't respect you or looks at you waiting for a command. I choose a dog with alert eyes and one that waits for a command they obey you better.
Yes I want to pick out my dog because I have to live with it for many years.

Control freak, go somewhere else. You are the customer. This bond is for the life of the dog, needs to be the right fit, for the dog as well as the owner.

The lady we got our boston from let us pick. Yes they do know the personalities, however its you that will be providing them with a forever home. Interestingly enough when we walked in the door she handed me a pup and said "based on what you told me, this one might be a good fit for your family" My wife and daughter didn't hear all that, I said nothing not wanting to influence anything, and we all 3 decided on the one the breeder said would be a good fit.

There was no pressure in any way shape or form though.

As far as the breeder naming the dog? I have never heard of that, Our boston had a "name" from the breeder, but it was for identification purposes only the breeder said the dog didnt know her name. We did change it.
