So I am bored and I have a new plan. Change oil right before winter cold sets in in Buffalo NY so it lasts all cold season.
I take a lot of short trips for work in VERY cold weather. This is 2014 Ford Flex with 3.5 Cyclone NA engine (wonderful sounding engine by the way).
I was thinking 0w-30 weight for the cold starts in the winter? Euro? Premium plus passenger? VII? 12-15k miles I am estimating.

Premium Plus has a lot of PAO, so it's good in cold weather.

If you short trip a lot, I would do a UOA before going right to 15k. How short are your short trips? Do you get any longer trips in during the month?

Yes I do a VERY long 700 mile trip once a month. Also at least once a day I get it up to temp and flog it because I it is fun and I am mindful about burning off moisture and italian tuneup

Sounds good! That will help you run the oil longer.

Some members have had HPL oils put a lot of material on the filter on the first run. I didn't have much in mine though.

Depends on how your previous oil change regimen was.

I believe @SubieRubyRoo has the same engine in his truck, albeit heavily tuned, and does long drain intervals with Euro No-VII 5W30.
Indeed… it went nearly 3x the distance as what Ravenol DXG did, had better ppm/1k results, didn’t thin to a 20-grade, and had a TBN of almost 7.8 after 14,400 miles. That’s with a bunch of E30 fuel and plenty of hard driving.

I most recently tried SuperCar 0w30, but since It doesn’t have the incredible starting TBN, I stuck to a 10k interval on that. Back on the No VII Euro 5w30 for good now. 😁

I am not good at trebble.. tribble... gerbil? Tribology! Out of euro vs premium plus 0w-30 for both which are easiest to crank over in the cold?

I drove 1644 miles nonstop from Yellowstone to home last year on Spring Break. 24 hours and 12 minutes door to door, only one driver. That included gas stops and a sit-down dinner in Sioux Falls, along with a 30-mile wide stint with a blizzard in Eastern Illinois.

To average nearly 68mph with the whole family and all stops included was probably one of the happiest days of my life. Two weeks ago it took me 12.75 hours to go from Montgomery AL home, 645 miles DTD due to multiple accidents, construction, and stops at Buc-ee’s. I was miserable the entire day! 🙁

HPL made both trips without using a single ounce of oil.

Winter rating numbers indicates a rough equivalency. Buffalo is not cold enough to require a 0w oil, especially if your car is garaged. A 5w30 will be fine with zero concerns.

It’s not like you live where @Snagglefoot does! 🤣

I would garage my flex but some mentally unstable eurotrash clown with an accent dragged in a 2005 cooper s in my garage and blew it up completely so I cant use the garage. When I finally catch the guy Ill sock him in the mouth, but so far I only broke mirrors.
