I don't think people hate this oil, most people that I know of know that it's a quality oil at a quality price. I wouldn't hesitate to use it at all.

Yeah!!!!!!!! What gives?????? Come on you lousy Trop Artic haters tell us what's with all the HATEING(sic) !!!!!!!!!!!

I do not think anyone hates it.It is a decent value but it is not a standout performer either. It has a weak additive package and does not hold it's TBN well at all. I would nothave a problem useing it if that is all I could afford but it is surely not my first choice. We really have no idea how much "synthetic" is in this "synthetic blend"!!! We do not even know what the synthetic protion is in terms of group number.

My understanding from posts regarding TropArtic several months ago is that the synthetic content is actually rather high in this oil. No problem with it in my book.

I was told by TECHS at CONOCOPHILIPS that the TROPARCTIC has at least 40 % synthetic , as does the KENDALL GT-1 Synthetic Blend . Thing is , you call again and get a different TECH and he'll tell you another % of synthetic , the staff really needs to get on track with one another .

Looking at most (not all) of the UOA's for TA, it seems to hold its TBN OK through 6,000 miles. I see no problem with this oil either.

Been using it as "house brand" at my shop as part of our $18.95 oil change special.

This is (4) guarts Tropartic {5-20,5-30,10-30), a Champ filter, lube if equipped with fittings, and other fluids checked. Obviously anything additional requires additional expense .

A few weeks back I changed the oil in my 98 Camry with 64K and the first oil change in our 07 Prius with TropArtic 5w30 after reading a lot of good things about it on this site.

I contacted ConocoPhillips via email and asked these questions:

-- What is the synthetic base stock used in Trop Artic?

-- What percent of the oil used in Trop Artic is this synthetic base stock?

Here's the response:

Because of proprietary concerns I can not address either question directly, but I can tell you that the minimum % is greater than 15 in the 10W-30 and greater still in the lower viscosities of 5W-20 and 5W-30. The % is great enough to make a difference.

So take that FWIW.

One local WalMart carries TA but they have been out of 5w30 for a few weeks now. I scored the last bottles. Plenty of 10w30 and 40 on the shelves at that store. Two other area WalMarts I checked don't carry TA.

A few days ago I posted the spec sheets for TA and Motorcraft semi-syn asking for someone in the know to compare the numbers since they are supposedly close, but nobody chimed in. Here it is again:
