PH16 & PH8 Bypass Valve Settings

My brother-in-law has a 1996 Dodge Caravan with the 3.3L pushrod engine. The manual calls for a PH16 sized oil filter. We measured that against the PH8/FL1A oil filter and the base including the gasket is the same. The threads looked the same and I'm assuming they are. He has plenty of space to install the larger filter. My question is how do the bypass valve settings compare. I did a search and didn't find anything

Same setting. The 8 is just a larger version of the 16.

Remember, bypass settings are determined by the filter not the engine. You shouldn't have to worry about bypass pressure in most engines.

The filters are the same, but I'd use the motorcraft version.

Does your van hold 4.5 quarts? With the bigger filter. Are you going to use 5 quarts then?

No, because the larger filter has only 7.92923896 oz. greater volume, not counting the additional "innards"!

. I really don't know how much oil the Caravan holds. The larger filter is 1.45" longer. How much added volume that is I don't know

I forgot to put the

after the 7.92923896!

I just made up a quickie little spreadsheet to calculate a basic cylinder volume by inputing height and diameter of the can.
Diameter^2*Height*.7854.
or Radius^2 *Height*PI.
This calculates the inches^3.
Calculate the liquid ounces from the volume in in^3.
I have a "input/result section" for 2 separate filters and just subtract one from the other.
Easier to do than explain!

It doesn't allow for the "dome" shaped end, the "innards" or any taper of the can.
IF the can is staight walled, the difference will be exact (minus the different amount of "innards" in that section), since the "dome" doesn't come into play (equal for both).

I also cross the filter to the Wix website which gives those dimensions (relatively painlessly), so your "mileage may vary" somewhat compared to another brand.
