Does anyone know of any difference between the pf1218 and the pf2232, other than the small difference in size? Has anyone used the pf2232 on a 1218 application?
 
I thought I'd bring this to the top. I do notice the ac/delco 2232 has a pressure relief valve set at 8-16 #'s. Puralator has filter #35399 also. My Chevy, bored and stroked (396 c.i.),LT1 block has the by-pass valve set up to never open and all the oil goes thru the filter. I have a high pressure Melling 55A pump. In the cold temperatures I have good oil pressure, oil getting to the rocker arm tips in about 25 seconds on 11 degree mornings. But, I wondered if a by-pass filter would be a better set up in the cold. The engine sounds like a diesel

when cold which I assumed was piston slap since they are forged and I have 3.875" stroke. The pressure relief valve setting is a differential between inlet pressure vs. outlet pressures correct? Comments?
 
Seems like the PF2232 should work in place of the PF1218's... I used UPF1218's on my 98 6.5L GM Diesel. The PF2232 is a heavy duty filter designed for the 6.6L Duramax Diesel which has cold start oil pressures in excess of 100psi. I currently use the Baldwin version (B1441) on my 03 Duramax and it has very good beta specs - 8 microns nominal (Beta=2, 50%), and 23 microns absolute (Beta=75, 98.7%). The Mobil-1 version of this filter (M1-303) is even better. It's specs are 5 microns nominal (Beta=2, 50%), and 18 microns absolute (Beta=75, 98.7%). If I didn't have an OilGuard bypass filter I would probably be using the M1-303.

When I first bought my Duramax I sent emails to AC Delco, Baldwin, Wix and AMSOIL requesting filter % efficiency ratings in microns for their DMAX OIL filters. All responded except AMSOIL.

Here are the numbers I was quoted.
AC DELCO PF2232: 25 microns nominal, 40 microns absolute (Beta numbers not stated)
WIX 57202 13 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 37 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)
Baldwin B1441: 8 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 23 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)
AMSOIL SDF-52: No response - May be identical to B1441 since Baldwin is OEM for AMSOIL

Also, when I heard about the new M1-303 I contacted Mobil. They refered me to a Tech Support person at Champ Labs (OEM for the M1 filters) who quoted me the M1-303 specs.

You could try contacting Purolator for their beta specs...

FYI....Last night I put on a Puralator 35399. I did not change the oil, filled the filter w/ 3/4 qt. of M1 0w30. I started the car and let it idle for 2 minutes or so.
This morning it was 18 degrees F. The car sat outside all night. The car still sounds like a diesel until it warms up.

Each morning, I let it idle for about 30 seconds before driving off. I go 400 feet to the end of my street in 1st gear at 2000 rpms. Oil pressure via the car's oil pressure gauge yesterday was 63 psi....20 degree temps. This morning it was definately higher at 68 psi. I'm assuming the bypass valve was open,

Previous filter was a PF-1218 w/ 1800 miles of filtering. Not very scientific but interesting to me.
