Does anyone have any experience with Petro-Canada's Synthetic in either the 5W-30 or 10W-30 grades? It looks like a good oil for a Group III on the spec sheet, but no-one knows better than the BITOG members.

Look forward to your replies...

Thinking of running the 'Artic 0W-30' in my Cav. this winter from Dec. - April. The cold specs on that oil are impressive.

I was going to get some from the Petro-Canada bulk place over on Merivale, but scored a good deal on PP, so my PC synthetic test will have to wait a few years.

I used Petro-Canada dino oil for many years and had no complaints at all. I would have no issues using their synthetic oil.

I probably should do this myself, but since you probably already have...

How do the specifications for Petro-Can Arctic stack up against GC 0W-30, I wonder? I was looking at Arctic after I did the change to 5W-30 last Saturday. May be worth a try. Let me know how it works for you.

Hi Brad,
Are the prices at the bulk depot on Merivale better than retail, or do you have to buy a certain amount to get a better rate?

In all honesty, I had no idea such a depot existed. Thanks for the tip!

To answer the above question, the PC synthetics are a LOT thinner in all grades than GC. I'd prefer THAT in -25 degree weather over all other specs, but that's just me.

Petro-Canada oils sold at gas stations are vastly overpriced. You have to generally buy case quantities from bulk plants, Arctic 0W-30 is $4.90 per litre in 12 by 1 litre cases, other synthetic grades are closer to $7 I believe.

Duron Synthetic 0W-30, which in my opinion, although thicker is a better oil is $6.25 per litre in 12 litre cases. It is slightly higher in ash and ZDDP than SM rated oils, a slightly thicker 30 weight at temperature, and has a pour point of -51 with a cold crank viscosity at -30 of 3,192 centipoise which is better than any 5W oil at that temperature, and is thin enough at -35 to rate as a 0W oil with performance nearing that of Mobil 1 0W-30.

It is SM rated but not GF-4, as it is rated as a diesel oil. It is a fairly high quality group III base oil.

That stuff is everything but a compromise, HT/HS of 3.3, 0W cold performance, 1200 ppm ZDDP, high detergent, and a TBN of 9.2.

It isn't a XD-3 0W-30 but it is comparable, and I think this is an oil that could run 7500 miles/12000 km in most vehicles without getting out of breath.

I want to see if they can roll that performance into a CJ-4/SM rated Duron-E version comparable to the Duron-E 0W-40.

If you have the ability to store oil and do changes yourself, then you want to buy in bulk if you want to run PC oil in your car.

But if you can't do the above, getting an oil change done at an 'OIL Changers' franchise that uses PC oil isn't as bad a deal as you would think....IF I wanted PC synthetic at gas station prices, I'm looking at $11.00/litre, which is $44.00 for the 4 litres I need, plus $6-7 for a 'decent' filter...about $50. Oil changers will do it for $59.95. Similar value for a conventionaL change...

I've come to realize the 'fuss' of trying to do my own changes at home, w/o room to really store oil and equipment, just isn't worth it. Plus, Oil Changes caught a sample for me to mail off for a UOA w/o a fuss....they've got my business, unless my circumstances change....

Oh, and I agree with you about Duron 0W-30 - very impressive numbers all around! I'd say it would run 10-12k miles (16-20k kms) without 'getting out of breath', though!
