Pet Driving Peeve

People that change lanes for no reason. I'll be going driving down the Interstate in the middle lane at 75 mph and a car in the right lane going 65 mph will decide they want to be in the middle lane and just move over. There are no cars in their right lane in front of them. No hazards. Nothing on the shoulder. They just prefer the middle lane. It creates the situation where the middle lane is the slow lane and left and right lanes are the passing lanes. That's not how it is supposed to be.

I like to intentionally stop people behind me when making a left on a green light so they don't have room to creep into the intersection. I do it while looking at my cell phone and pretending not to notice them as they get stuck behind me at the light. I also have no friends.

FYI, when you are waiting to turn left, keep your wheels straight until the opposing lane is clear and you are going to drive through the intersection. I've seen too many accidents, including a fatal one, when a left turning vehicle was rear ended and pushed into oncoming traffic because their wheels were turned left.

I remember that being imparted by my driving instructor. Whether that was his own personal advice, or part of the standard curriculum I don't recall.

The corollary to that is to keep the brakes applied at a red signal, to prevent being pushed into the intersection in any case, as well as try to signal the texters behind you approaching at 50mph that traffic has stopped for the light. Not the time to throw it into Park, apply the parking brake and take a chill. But I've seen that happen, given away by the reverse lights brief flash as their lever is shifted back to drive.

Common sense things, but there is little sense in most modern drivers.

I keep seeing this thread title the past few days and it's driving me nuts...maybe a mod can fix it? Speaking of pet peeves ;)

Nice tap dance...
Not a tap dance. Tell me...in the last week, have you 1) exceeded the speed limit...even by a mph? 2) have you come to a complete stop as in fully/roll back at each and every stop sign and right on red? Have you followed every traffic law to a "T"? Every single person here has not whether they want to admit it or not...I just did driving my son to the dentist - speeding and I'm sure I rolled some right on reds. Why do bikes infuriate folks so much for something that is enocunted what...a few times a month for most folks on main roads (not counting neighborhoods etc. where kids are riding)? Go ride a bike on a public road and have folks: 1) throw things at you that could cause serious injury/put you in the hostpial 2) roll coal on you at a stop sign 3) swerve to make you crash and 4) yell at your so aggressively that I wanted to have a firearm with me I was that scared for my safety all b/c 1) drivers are ticked that folks on bikes treat red lights/stop signs as yeilds and 2) slowed you down by less than a minute to your destination. There's no excuse in the world for the behavior that I have experienced riding in a suburban area following the rules of the road over the last 15 years. In some states it's legal to go through a stop sign or red light (called an "Idaho stop") while on a bike (treating as a yield sign in certain circumstances i.e. no traffic coming) and in VA a motorist can pass a cyclist on a double yellow to maintain safe distance. Some cyclists ride like idiots (I saw 99% at some point..seriously?), that's not an agument but in the end, if you are in a car/truck you will always win that battle so take a deep breath and get on with your day.

More pointing to bad behavior to justify bad behavior. Very few drivers (of any vehicle type) obey the traffic laws anymore, and the driving public has been conditioned to drive this way, which is evident by the comments in this, and other forums, but I think the topic of this thread pertains to cyclists who blatantly disregard all driving laws. You've seen them, I've seen them, we all have, and nobody's complaining about bicyclists who come to a rolling stop...what they're doing is much worse, and much more dangerous...

The topic was about people who stop in the intersection to make a left... pretty sure cyclists had nothing to do in the OP's first posting.

Green light and traffic coming the other way. I want to turn left. I go beyond the line so when it turns red I can go left. The majority of people will wait behind the line and wait for another cycle.

Doesn't sound like a proper or legal driving practice to be over the line then proceeding when the signal turns RED!

We now have a proliferation of left turn RED arrows with a GREEN light.

I refuse to be governed by this "unintelligent" thing. Some other controls with cams and sensors will at some point STOP oncoming moving line of traffic to let just let little me take a left from the left turn only lane. Talk about wasted fuel and rage fodder!

There were NO Traffic controls at theses intersections five or ten years ago! Been driving 'round these parts for half a century, Junior!

What do I do If no one is behind me? Look around for cops and I take a left on RED arrow when safe to do so.
Not twiddlin' my thumbs for 3 minutes! I am a Thinking Being!

It's just custom around here.

Don't blame you, although I'll just wait--who knows where the fuzz is hiding. I tempt them enough already.

But some of the lights could stand to be smarter. Rush hour and this programming makes sense. Off rush hour and it ought to be a blinking light. Don't worry, I bet they'll change the programming soon enough--there's a light near me that used to prefer one direction over the other. No sooner did they finally change the programming did I move--and now hit it from the non-preferred direction. I swear, it's programmed to dislike me.

But I'm guessing it's no small science to do the programming (between the actual science part and then the legal parts). And then you have to have the hardware that actually controls the lights. I'm sure none of it is cheap nor easy. Easier to critique from the peanut gallery.

"Some cyclists ride like idiots (I saw 99% at some point..seriously?)" - from my post.
