In Ohio it’s called “clearance on yellow”-pull into intersection, light turns yellow, ONE CAR can turn left. Although around here it’s usually “light turns yellow, three cars run the red, then try to get out of the way before you get T-BONED!!”!

I'm in a suburb of Akron, so while I complain about bad drivers they arent nearly as aggressive as Ohio drivers in bigger cities.. Cleveland, C-bus, cincy etc.
Usually just a mix of impaired elderly, texters, and/or meth'ed up people

Girl with baby on board merged infront of me at 35mph into 60-70mph traffic she almost went off road due to texting (luckily the on ramp is super wide for 1 lane)
I pass her.. then shes flying in the fast lane at 85 in a 60.. poor baby on board and large dog.

I do this all the time. Typically, the light won't need to be red to go through, just yellow but of course you have to wait until all cars are through to go so could be red by the time all traffic is through/you can go. I just judge it best I can whether I should pull out into the intersection or not. Shouldn't be an issue blocking the intersection b/c I'm not sure any intersections have lights that don't have a delay before the other direction turns green. Pretty normal routine but I suppose a police officer could yank you for it...running a red, blocking intersection if they were feeling it. Here in VA, we've recently changed many intersection to flashing left hand yellows in between green arrow cycles, really helps move folks through that normally would have to wait at an empty intersection. I can also tell you if you are first in line for that non-green arrow left and go as soon as it turns green to beat the traffic coming through from the other side, that is in fact illegal...got a "failure to yield" ticket when I was younger doing that.

Those who do not know to enter the intersection if they are making a left turn are a problem. Another problem around here is those who stop at least a full car length back from the line at a red light.

Or those that stop on the cross walk/past the line....or keep creaping...

I think it's illegal to do that in our state. I've lived in multiple states and getting my license here I vaguely remember that being different. And most people wait behind the stop line, unlike other states I've lived in, so I don't know if it's legal here. I don't think it is. Also odd that when, say, E/W lights turn red N/S lights IMMEDIATELY turn green. No pause. Which is different, too.

Especially when they’re driving a transport truck. Just this weekend here on a major highway there was a disabled vehicle on the side of the road and a transport truck drove straight into the back of it. Totally avoidable. Guy in the car is in critical condition

Having said that there are a multitude of lights here where exactly zero people would get to turn left for several hours a day, so everyone does it.

Seems like one of those that likely gets a lot of discretion applied like many other traffic rules.

Not sure that’s truly the appropriate way, but it’s what I’ve always done.

That said, the last minute left turn, and another driver doing the last minute speed through the yellow/red, have often resulted in deadly outcomes. I’ve seen it more than once.

Big given the horrid timing of lights, sometimes you get so fed up….

I do a pretty good job of avoiding LH turns or at least plan them in light traffic not doing 50 mph …
The pull out thing seems like “watch me run this light”
Just leave early …

Absolutely - but it is in fact the law. Whether applied or not is another matter.

I was on an accident review board for 15 years. Our long time board members looked at entering the intersection awaiting a left hand turn as “owning the intersection” once the oncoming traffic was stopped at the red light. Of course it’s expected that the driver quickly makes the turn before the cross traffic takes off. I was also taught this in driver’s education in 1974.

Bicyclists who totally ignore laws, which here is 99% of cyclists.
I wish all people who rode bikes on roads, had to pass a written test, and skills test, buy insurance, and have license plates on their bikes.

Wait—are you saying that car drivers, after doing all that to get their license, are now perfect drivers?

As a cyclist I pay plenty in taxes and insurance.
