Actually, in my car (an '04 G35 sedan), it's called a "Service Engine Soon" light, but the function is the same as what is better known as a "Check Engine Light".
Last Wednesday, while driving from Pensacola to Orlando (about 450 miles, one way), my light came on. At first, the car seemed very slightly rough, but otherwise ran fine (yes, the fuel cap was on tight), and since then, there has been no detectable performance change. The light stayed on Thursday - Saturday while I was driving locally in Orlando. Saturday afternoon, the local Infiniti dealer was kind enough to plug it and pull the code for me. It said "A/F SENSOR1 (B1) [P1273]". From what the service folks said, it sounds like an indication originating from what most of us call the oxygen sensor in the exhaust. Of course, they could not work on it then, but said I was safe to drive home. Svc manager looked a little taken aback when I asked if this meant I'd be driving long distance in "open loop", but he said yes, and that I'd be fine, but would burn a tad more gas doing so (he was right -- 22 mpg hwy coming home
).
Anyway, on Sunday (yesterday) I started the car in the morning, and you guessed it, no light!
Thankfully, I have the paper strip from the code reader so I can "prove" that I have something going on when I return to the local dealer. Any thoughts on what might be happening here?
My apologies for the length.
