My sons check engine light came on the other day. I suspected maybe gas cap. It doesn't "Click" all the time when installed he said. I tried it myself and it's definitely worn out. He ordered a replacement (be here tomorrow.)

The odd part was when he got to my house, I hooked up my code reader and it didn't find any codes, but the light had gone out. I thought there would still be a code in the system?

My code reader is just a cheapie, but it has always done what I needed:

Maybe that is the issue though.

Sometimes a fault is "current" but not "stored" in the memory. Maybe it has to occur a certain number of times to be "stored" or perhaps the code reader only sees "current" faults. If it's not "current", it's gone for emission inspections so no need to worry about it.

Thank you for the explanation. Appreciate it. Makes a lot of sense.

I had an intermittent CEL (P0456 I think - small evap leak) and a new gas cap fixed it.

So, replaced gas cap. Light has been gone two days and he just called me and said light is back on. Hopefully I’ll get a code this time. Not sure what’s happening.

No code. Light on. No code. Weird?

I went ahead and ordered a genuine OEM Hyundai gas cap. The one I bought was just a generic one on Amazon.

When light comes on again, I told him to stop at an auto parts store and see if they can read the code.

I agree on a factory cap from Hyundai. Had a dud gas cap from parts store years ago. Same issue with a radiator cap as well.
