Pep Boys is a Freaking Rip-Off

jeez, some of the non-whites are the most polite people out there. It takes someone with class to recognise it.

I always go out of my way to make someone feel comfortable by holding a door and even cutting in front of me in line when appropriate. A lot of "them" seem surprised!!!

Some of the most soul-less and arrogant waste products of society I know are white. It takes projecting a certian attitude of "feeling" superior, when you are NOT, to really deserve being slapped down. I think of how it must suck to have unfounded biases against you by racist loosers. Sure, I love my race and heritage, but that's not based on hating others.

Steady everyone -- let's be careful not to cross the obvious lines.

I'll just add that I haven't let Poop-Boyz do ANYTHING to ANY of my cars since about ten years ago when they air-wrenched my wheels back onto my Civic, hopelessly warping the rotors in the process. If they had been willing to accept some responsibility, I'd have some respect for them, but they didn't, even though I'd watched them do it (and couldn't get to them fast enough to stop them...). This said, I suppose the only real difference between Poop-Boys and AZ is that Poop-Boyz has service bays where employed morons actually inflict real damage on people's cars, whereas at AZ, the same morons are pretty much limited to giving foolish advice (like the classic 0w-30 is too thing stuff...). Rant off.

Again, please keep it within the bounds of public decency so I don't have to lock it down. Thanks all.

You're an attorney, why'd you let them get away with it?

I'm guessing you're talking about the PepBoyz on Davis Hwy.

If so, that's the EXACT same store that charged my mother an extra $40 for replacing an alternator belt due to "AC interference." On her car, you have to remove the AC belt to change the alternator belt. The problem was that she was also having the AC belt replaced, and so it had to be removed anyway.

Because taking them to court would have involved a much greater expenditure of money and time than just taking the thing to a competent mechanic and having the rotors turned (which is what I did). You've gotta pick your battles carefully...

Yup, exact same store. I'll occasionally buy something there for my own use, but only if I haven't been able to find it somewhere else. And I don't even look toward their "service" bays.

I don't care if they're white, black, or purple. I just want them to give a dam about me at their counter!

I use the air wrench on my lug nuts. My lowest level on the impact consistently puts down 100lbs/in.

The warping of the rotors and whatnot with the lug nuts can happen anywhere. The Acura dealership cross-threaded one of my lug nuts when I had my tires rotated/balanced and I had to get a new stud put on at a different place when I couldn't figure out why the lug nut wouldn't come off.

I don't really mind Pep Boys really, I've purchased a bunch of things there, and at least around here most of the workers are decent and competent (except one, who seems rude and would rather be at home). I've had some good buys on some oil on sale before as well. Not CSK prices, but before I found out about CSK it was a great deal and I purchased 2 cases from them. I can't speak for their service department as I've never used it. I also go there for their ProLine oil filters which are great filters IMO, and very decently priced. Every once in a while they'll also have the PureONE and Premium Plus filters on sale and I'll stock up if possible. I also like going to Napa for filters, especially their ProSelect line for the two GM vehicles I service. I buy my Napa Golds from FleetFilter.

All I can say is everywhere is a freaking rip-off unless you buy your oil and filter on discount mail in rebate deals, Walmart included.

If your friend went to Pepboys and get their oil change special, he is still better off than going to Walmart. Even better he should have gone to Kragen and get their 99c after rebate oil, doing combined rebates with Valvoline, etc.

But in reality, time is expensive and a couple dollar more to save you a 30 miles trip may be cheaper.

Non-English speaker problem? Sure, this is America, unless you live in the middle of no-where that has no job or in those 2 million dollar per home neighborhood, there are non-English speakers every store you go (Kragen, Pepboys, Walmart, Autozone, McDonalds, Safeway, Albertson, you name them).

mpvue,

Yes, I know Wegmans Grocery Chain. Wish they were everywhere. Their Produce Department alone is larger than my local Publix or Albertsons. A couple years ago, Wegmans was listed as number 1 of the top 100 places to work in the USA. Anyone that sees a Wegmans in Western New York, Pennsylvania, or elsewhere, should go in and see how it should be.

Everyone else, - Back to Pep-Boys.
I now very seldom go to Pep-Boys because it seems that everything they have and advertised is with a "Mail in Rebate". I hate rebates, and I can normally get it cheaper elsewhere. I used to go to Pep-Boys all the time, but now, if I go there once a year, I've gone a lot.

I stopped going there when they had a buy one get one free on air filters. ( coupon did not specity anything special, just said air filters, did not say engine air filters only) They refused to honor the coupon on a cabin air filter. So, that was the last time I visted them!

They do seem to be very inconsistant when honoring coupons. Some months ago, they had a coupon for Purolator oil filters for something like $2.49, limit of four, "all part numbers". I grabbed my Pure Ones, but the guy at the register wouldn't honor the coupon. I pointed out the "all part numbers" but he insisted the Pure Ones weren't part of the deal.

I took the coupon to another Pep Boys location and they cheerfully honored the coupon for my four Pure Ones.

Since then, I've noticed their coupons are a little different; they mention there is an extra charge for the Pure Ones.

One WalMart in "Hometown" PA is pretty nice. It's as good as Wegman's in Wilkes-Barre on the inside and not busy at all. A few extra minutes driving, but it's a nice quiet road and well worth the extra drive.

Even the White people are polite. Just kidding. I made those statments not to be incitfull so much as for people with borderline attitudes to hear it from one of their "peers". Not a big deal.

Also, the QL is empty. I get like 3 dudes doing my tire work. It's finished before they get done writing me up. No joke. The people there all seem happy with their jobs and I recognize a few from the more local store.

...but WalMart sucks.

You tell us to keep it in the "bounds of public decency" and then you call a company some of us have worked for/or are working for "Poop-Boys"? Not once but 3 times? That's pretty sad. I worked for PEP BOYS many years ago, and I know some fine people who still do!
You may have had a problem with one store, but that doesn't mean all the stores are bad.
I'll admit they don't always have the lowest prices - so what? That's what America is all about! Go down the street to someplace else!
But for a moderator to do this type of thing, to me is just unbelievable!

Come on guys, I couldn't imagine how can you complain when they refuse to honor air filter and Purolator coupons for "cabin" air filter and PureOne. It makes sense a grandma or a soccor mom would be that up tight, but you should know what it means when they give you those discounts. It would be nice if they honor that, but if they don't, you shouldn't expect them to.

As to my own complain: why does everywhere has to run out of all the good stuff on discount/coupon/rebate within 4 hours of the deal came out on the day? I am never able to find 5w30 oil on crazy deal (only 10w30 and 5w20), never ever a Honda oil filter in stock for SuperTech or Kragen/Pepboys discount. Come on, when you give out a discount, have the inventory, otherwise why bother? Just lying to get customers into the shop and refuse to give the deal by low inventory?

I remember the last time Pep Boys had the 1 cent oil filter deal going on, they didn't have a single oil filter for any application I needed aside from my car, but I passed because I already have ~15 filters for my car, way more than enough for the next 4-5 years.

If you're referring to my post (about the Pure Ones), I think a coupon that says "ALL PART NUMBERS" actually is intended to include the Pure Ones. When they specifically exclude the Pure Ones, they say "except Pure One", or "$2 extra for Pure One" or something similar like that.
