Is it just me or do most people that back into their parking sport think they and their car is just too cool?

I mostly see it with guys that drive some exotic Euro car. They often back in taking up two spots at a "cool" angle. I wonder if they realize that nobody but them thinks they are cool.

I also see a lot of union guys do it as well.

Fancy parking is what a lot of people call it.

I am not against backing up to park if there is a reason, but it does not make someone more cool.

With in my field. It is required to back into a spot. To eliminate backing out accidents. So its a habit for some. Depending on the parking lot I will back in if its easier to leave.

I do it to make pulling out easier, especially in parking lots with lots of old people that cannot turn their neck to see if anyone is behind them. They just back out hoping that anyone coming stops.
Do not ask how I know this, someday you will find out.

I don't drive cool cars, but I'm cool. I just find two open spots & pull-through. I stop in the second spot so it looks like I backed in, but I didn't.

Now what?

I have NEVER seen a parking lot that REQUIRES one to back into their parking spot.

What about backing into accidents?

Yeah, it's just you.

But seriously, attributing any level of vanity to a stranger based on them backing their car into a parking space is unreasonable to say the least.

Absurd, what about the possibility of some kind of accident happening while backing in?

Does backing into a parking spot eliminate the need to use the reverse gear on an automobile? No, so no advantage is gained.

It isn't cool to take up 2 parking spots.

It's just you. I can back my full size truck into a spot and be dead center where if I pulled in I'd have to back out at least once to get centered. Trucks got longer and parking spots got narrower. Do it with my uncool cars too, pulling out is safer than backing out. Not every time but if it's doable yep.

Haven't yet figured out how to pull into a parallel parking spot without backing, maybe you have to keep from being too cool?

The guys that take 2 spots are keeping us low lifes away to prevent door dings.

edit: I lied, the Samurai will pull into a parallel spot!

Whenever I'm driving s long wheelbase truck/vehicle, like the Ram or Transit in my sig, it is much easier & safer to back into a spot than to pull in. Plus the Transit has no side nor rear windows, makes it nearly impossible to see sideways when backing out-literally have to wait for somebody to honk!

Go look at a telephone central office. You're likely to see all the vehicles backed into spots. When you drive past the open spot you can see that it's clear before backing in.

Insurance guys will tell 20%+ of accidents happen in parking lots. Rarely serious, but still a risky business. Nothing wrong with backing in if done well. I don't do it often but will always pull forward in a double length whenever possible.

You seem to be confusing two very different things:

This is fine:

.. THIS, however, is NOT okay:

As far as the difference between backing in and backing out. Backing IN to a parking spot, all you need to be able to see is the space you're pulling into..
.. Backing OUT, however, requires you to see everything AROUND the parking spot, including cars going perpendicular to your back-out path, which is frequently very difficult.

We done here?

In parking lots where I went to a lot (school, work, etc) I would back up because it's much easier to pull out VERY fast at the end of the day.

I back in AND take two spots. Of course, I have a valid reason. I drive a mini-van full of kids and strollers and it is nearly impossible to load the car with normal spacing, especially if some tool parks 6 inches off my side. Parking is not at a premium in my town and every super center store I go to has hundreds and hundreds of empty parking spaces, so its not a big deal.
