The accident is less likely. Backing into a space is not the same as backing into the aisle where there is more chance to hit a vehicle coming down the aisle.
How many cars are coming out of an empty parking spot?
Now if you hit one of the parked cars, chances are you are not a good driver and are as likely to hit a car going forward as you are backing in.
If I can't pull through, I back in so I can pull out more safely. I can see cars in the aisle much easier when I'm driving forward than I can when reversing into the aisle.

Does backing into a parking spot eliminate the need to use the reverse gear on an automobile? No, so no advantage is gained.
