People aren't just the same any more...

I have a similar-themed story. For her birthday, I bought my Mom a massive Devil's Claw Willow tree for her townhouse, as a curb tree. The opening in the cement was about 4x4 and was partly sighted on the older street curb, about a foot below, that intruded about a foot into the opening...makeing it more like 3x4. It was a tough dig and no way was the root ball going to fit into this opening as-is. When the tree was delivered, it was huge and dumped right on the street. Get-er-done. So, we basicly had to cut the sidewalk back to make a bigger opening, no big deal. Well, one of the ~guys~ from next-door came out and threw a hissy-fit about the fact we did not "let him know" we decided to do that. Mind you, here we are 11pm and the tree HAS to go IN.

My take was that if he showed any interest in it, he would have came outside to see and ask about it. This after he had agreed to pay 1/2 the costs to extract the old tree. He stiffed my Mom for that, although they were friendly and even shared the cost of a lil brick accent wall around the tree a few years later.

People are wierd.

I call it being socially ignorant, but in some cases, just being socially stupid.. There seems to be a lot of that going around these days.

I grew up in a rural environment and completely understand what Shannow and Helen are talking about.

I wonder what happened that caused this loss of social consciousness .

In cities and many parts of the West Coast, it probably has to do with lots of in and out migration so communities don't really get established. I also think people are more cynical and suspicious today. Like that fellow Shannow mentioned.

They heard I had surgery and that was enough.

Must be nice.

I had foot surgery in January 2007 and we got some snow right after that. Not only did none of the neighbors bother to help, several were on the HOA message board whining about people not "maintaining their property" -- the new Millennium's equivalent of "doing something" I suppose.

What really bothered me was that one of the neighbors that didn't bother was someone who had their driveway cleaned by me multiple times when I was unemployed. I figured I was outside anyway and they would be getting home from work late so why not be a good neighbor....since then I've learned and I'm now just like everyone else. For better or worse.

When we bought our house there was a couple of day gap between closing and moving in - closed on Wednesday afternoon, started moving in on Saturday morning. As we were moving in we were accosted by a woman walker who said we were a disgrace to the neighborhood because we had let the yard get out of hand.

When I told her we had only owned the house for a little over two days, pointed out the rush that always accompanies moving, etc, she got very huffy and said I should have hired someone to do it.

By the way - the yard wasn't shaggy. Just maybe higher than her personal standards.

If you had a mower handy, you could have let her demonstrate how to properly take care of it.

Reminds me of years ago, I was walking and a car stopped running nearby. A couple guys jumped out and started pushing, and were pushing about as fast as anyone could, toward a nearby parking lot to get the car out of the street. Here comes this idiot in another car up behind them BLOWING THE HORN. Uh, duh, they're pushing it out of the way, what else are they supposed to do? People are nuts.

No HOA here, or across the street from me either.

Now you guys are making me feel like a heel for not helping the geezer. It's something of a matter of local pride to handle one's own lawn mowing and snow removal which makes such offers, at times, border on insulting to one's manhood etc.

I cannot imagine an online forum devoted to one's own little neighborhood, especially if it's mostly about complaining about whatever.

I'm from Memphis, TN. if your lawn isn't maintained, we didn't have a home owners association, they called the city to complain. the local city official would give you a warning. no one offered to cut each other's grass. I wonder if I lived in some of you guys neighborhood, would you hook me up with help on removing a transmission.
