Pentius PLXL 7317 Initial Impressions vs Microgard Select

That's not been my professional experience supporting fuel filter development. Real world efficiency decreases with what's called "face velocity." More velocity through the filter, less efficiency.
In other words, with more fluid velocity is through a flow restriction, the higher the dP. This is the reason some oil filters lose a lot of efficiency as the dP across the media goes up. Some filters slough off already captured debris pretty badly as the filter loads and the dP increases (ie, Boss and XP), and some don't (OG Ultra and Royal Purple). If you see a filter with a high ISO 4548-12 efficiency, by definition of the ISO efficiency, that filter is not sloughing off much debris as the dP increases. We saw this in Ascent's ISO 4548-12 testing thread in this forum.

This also means that the filter that's good at retaining captured debris will be much less sensitive to changes in fluid flow rate (ie, dP fluctuations and spikes). In an ISO 4548-12 test, they would be less sensitive to what the established test flow rate is, because they are a low debris sloucher with dP increase from either flow rate or loading. This is another good reason to use filters with high ISO 4548-12 efficiecy ratings. Oil filters see dP fluxuations all the time from changing oil viscosity due to oil temperature changes, and also from engine RPM fluxuations while the car is being driven around.

Exactly.

The behavior over time is pretty distinct to different media blends. For example, the old Stratapore fuel filters tended to lose efficiency a good bit halfway through the filter life and drop to the mid 80s percent wise. The upside was everyone raved about how "long lasting they were." Well, yes, because they aren't catching much past half life.

The opposite is true of Nanonet, which keeps very high efficiency over time, and even does it in the presence of vibration. The downside to Nanonet is that it will just keep trucking along happy on a nice linear (and predictable) trend and then suddenly the dP will skyrocket quickly and it's plugged. It's the Frank's Red Hot of filter media- that "stuff" catches everything. So while it delivers both superior efficiency AND long last media for the same physical size, it's more sensitive to contaminants. I consider that to be a good thing, I'd rather plug a filter than an injector.

We had to actually back off the Nanonet fuel filter efficiency at super tiny particles (3 microns) because it was plugging from trace contaminants like pipeline corrosion inhibitors and such in the supply chain. Since filter media is tested with test dust, you can get surprises when it's semisolid or gel-like contaminants that tend to plug filters.

The current industrial NN fuel filters use two layers of 3 micron media where before it was a 3 micron with a 2 micron underlayer, which was where the corrosion inhibitors would accumulate and form a gel-like coating that plugged filters. The injectors don't care about the tiny difference, but it makes the filters last twice as long (or more!) before plugging.

Just wanted to say, I work for a service pro sponsored quick lube, and the filters are junk. Quite a few of the smaller ones (I think e4622 and e4476) I've pulled off cars and shook the filter and the media was shaking around like it was either too small or the glue failed. Also had a massive recall right before I started on the e2500s, the silicone gasket would become dislodged and get sucked into the motor. Gm dealership up the road had pallets of 3.6 shortblocks they had to replace because of them. I refuse to run one on my personal vehicle because of that reason. I don't know if premium guard just skimps out on these ones or what, but I don't trust them

Really ??

Well let's get some of these cut open and get the photos up . ... What are you waiting for ??

you can get them open easily like this

Price was listed as $56.75 when I purchased this exact same case in December 2023. Has only gone up a few cents since. I'm pretty sure what you saw was the price for their regular base performance filters.

I think a lot of the Asian filters that all look similar, regardless if under PGI, Highline Warren, Pentius, etc are all built in some of the same larger oil filter manufacturing factories in Vietnam, China and S. Korea. One thing they all have in common is the center tube with large holes ... no louvers are used in any of them.

I knew that, which was why I was surprised they look same or similar. I can't see any differences. What differences are people seeing?

Pentius has tighter pleats and an internal metal crimped seam and almost always a little cleaner than the PG Vietnam and China factories.

Does that mean Pentius is slightly better than PG Vietnam?

Everything I've ever bought that was made in South Korea has been excellent. In fact, the best I've ever owned: Samsung TV & phone, 2 sets of LG washer and dryer for 2 homes, Hankook all season tires for my Buick, rear diff gears for regearing my Jeep XJ. I've been impressed by the quality everytime.
