So I went to the Penrite AU website to see what oil they recommend for my '91 4Runner. According to them, Penrite HPR 15 15w-60 would be a good choice, or perhaps HPR 30 in 20w-60, or even 10 Tenths in 10w-70. Interestingly, there is a stockist less than 50 miles from me, but I don't think I'm ready to try 20w-60 yet.

For giggles, I tried it for our Subaru. The results aren't too ridiculous; there's a 5W-30 (what the US manual recommends), two 5W-40s, and a 10W-40.

Penrite will always recommend the thickest allowed option or even a grade higher for an older car. Their retail marketing angle is thicker is better. Your car probably allows for a 20w50 in Australia

My '90 calls for 5W30 (less than 86 degrees), 10W30 or 10W40 summer.

I am sure it would run with anything...the 3.0 V-6 has no power anyway...so you'll never feel the decrease from 20W50... But mine has good oil pressure with a 30 or 40, so unless your bearings are shot, you don't need anything heavier....

LOL you've gotta love Penrite, they're pretty much a thick oil cult down here, especially for older cars. They do seem to be changing though, I've noticed recently they've added some good new thinner oils to their synthetic line up.

For comparison, Valvoline, Shell and Castrol's Australian sites recommend 10W40 or 15W40 for your 4-Runner.

Maybe Penrite could borrow from some of the cheesy Castrol ads that you guys get there in North America. Something along the lines of:

"Think with your oil pressure gauge Jimmy, you need a 70 weight in there!"

I was thinking that I might use some of the 10w-70, and maybe thin it out with some Lucas Oil Stabilizer.

I didn't know Penrite was available in the States?

They show a dealer in Escondido, CA, one in Atlanta, GA, and one in Edmonton. So I guess you can get it in Canada, too.
