First, howdy all! Been probably 8yrs since I last posted in here, love the new to me digs and amazed my PW still works!

Been a Shell Rotella T user for the last 10 years (over 100k put on my M3 with it (now at 204K) and picked up an '04 Z06 last year, so far just been running the "recommended" M1 5W-30 in it.

Today I got newsletter from Corvette forum with an ad from Pennzoil where they claim (their test I assume) that the new "Ultra" oil is more then 30% cleaner then M1.

Now cleaner doesn't mean as much to me as protection. Wondering what data is out there and how it compares to M1 and even Shell Rotella T in general. Is it worth making a switch or is it just hype?

The claim: Pennzoil Ultra Claims

Thanks!

Pennzoil Ultra is for sure a great quality oil. Is it better than Mobil1? Debatable.

Really, buy which ever one you can get cheaper. You certainly wont be sacrificing protection either way.

Have you considered Pennzoil Platinum or QSUD?? Their both usually allot cheaper than Mobil1 or Ultra, and have been proven to produce great UOA results.

But really, ANY of the above oils will serve your engine well

That'll teach you to quit storing wheel balancing weights in partially full M1 bottles.

What's funny though, is the rubber valve stems that WM sells also contain "a Chemical known to the state of California" to cause cancer :P

But yea....I saw the guys having one [censored] of a time getting the new-fangled steel weights onto rims......primarily due to the fact that the steel doesn't "give" as much as the lead did/does......lead is "softer" basically.....so one whack to the weight, and it's stuck......not so, with the steel weights.

I would run PU 5w30 or M1 5w30 in the Vette. Both are fine oils.

You can largely ignore the specific brand recommendation made by Chevy...that is more a measure of which company had the highest bid, not whose oil is best.

For the most part oil is oil the more expensive the oil the more it will cost you!
Its all about ratings buy the cheapest oil you can find with the ratings you need.
oil is oil if you think any oil is the best why dont you see the oil companies marketing their oil as the best??? Because there is no best. We use conoco at the shop great oil good price.

Some good info folks, thanks!

On my M3 I tend to go about 10k between changes. Engine still rips!

Corvette I go by the Oil life, not had it long enough to do a 2nd change.

We also have a '03 Passat W8 Variant, a '94 E36 318is, a '99 Miata (track car) and wifes '08 Audi TTq V6 6sp. (only one that gets Dealer changes) Lots of oil changes happen here.

If your engine is clean and you see no varnish, I personally would focus more on protection and wear than extra cleaning ability. I am not the guy who goes 15,000-20,000 between changes...not with anything. M1, PU, Synpower, will all protect well. If you go extended drains, the first two seem to last longer. I'd actually have no problem with using and may prefet to use Valvoline with shorter OCIs. GC is another favorite of mine but I guess I will have to go to Edge now that GC is basically not something I can find.

True, PU is about the best oil out there. I am religious about changing oil so I have the luxury of using any of the good ones I choose to. PU and GC are probably my top two.
