Hello everyone. I'm new to this site, but I just wanted to contribute and see what you guys think.

- 1998 Honda CR-V, 133,502 miles (Original owner)
- 4 quarts Pennzoil Conventional (PYB) 5w30, SM Formulation
- 3,800 mile oil run, 1/3 highway, 2/3 city (2-3 mile trips)
- 16 oz. of MMO added to last 1,000 miles of oil run
- Purolator PureONE oil filter (PL14559)
- Used Fumoto valve (F106N) to drain oil
- K&N drop in air filter (used for 1 year/12,000 miles)
- Previous oil run was similar, but this is my first report. Have never used a synthetic oil and the majority of the oil changes before the last three were at quick lube shops.

I replaced the K&N air filter with a Microgard Air Filter (Fram made I believe) and will retest after the current oil run to monitor silicon.

Would almost guarantee you the silicon is from the K&N. The vis is down a little but I contribute that to the addition of the MMO.

Nice report. Keep on doing what you're doing. Also agree with doing a longer oil change. Try 5,000 miles.

Ditto with what Johnny said.

Get rid of your K&N air filter and put back a stock (even a Fram would score much better) OE air filter. I bet ya silicon reading will drop back to normal average level.

Also: unless you are curious or trying to achieve something: I wouldn't do anything with MMO (don't see the point in this case).

Q.

Good report except the silicon is way high. Get a Honda oem AF. Always install your AF,immediately,BEFORE,an oil change. That's what I do,so it must be right.

I'm amazed that silicon could be so high and wear so low

PYB is some good oil and that is a good wearing engine, keep it up!

BTW What was the majority brand of oil used in this vehicle? Just curious:)

Thanks for the replies. I've only been doing my own oil changes the last three times (first time ever was in June of 2010). Before that I would just take it to either my mechanic or a quick lube station and honestly never paid attention to what they were putting in. Usually the receipt did say 10w40 oil though.

Since stumbling across the BITOG forums, I've been intrigued (I'm not going to say obsessed yet) with oil and I plan on driving my car until it dies. I'm trying to keep things consistent with PYB, and have used MMO to see if it helps with varnish. I guess I want to add some data to the MMO debate, as well as the K&N debate as well (I think I already got the answer to that one).

Here is a photo underneath my valve cover. Although I doubt I need any extra help with it, I guess I wouldn't be a true BITOGer if I didn't do a little experimenting right?

Layzee,
If the silicon is comming from the K&N, as other have said, try another air filter. I'm not keen on K&N filters in certain parts of the country(Long Beach may be one of these locations).
Or, have you had any gasket replaced recently? If so, this too may be the cause of the high silicon level.

The varnish looks normal to me as I have seen lots of engines that were superbly maintained that had lots of varnish. It'd be nice if they're were less varnish but, it is what it is!
Maybe if the oil was wiped down, the engine would look perfectly clean, IDK. But, it doesn't look bad!

Excellent report other than the Si. OEM/paper filter and stick with the PYB. Love the moly!

I agree 100%, and I'm no K&N lover. It either didn't seal well in the airbox or there is a leak somewhere else in the intake or engine.

Does MMO have silicon in it?!?!

Nothing wrong w/ adding MMO for the last 500-1000 miles of your OCI. Report looks good minus Si, hopefully the new filter will bring it down.

Yeah, that's what I said at first too but, I'm now thinking that if Layzee wiped the oil off a spot,(any spot) in the engine, the oil might wipe right off and show clean internals. Could just be the color of the oil hanging on the the parts. I have seen this before also. Hard to say really since it's only a picture that we're seeing!

I see where you replace the valve cover with that fancy red one. Some of the silicon might have come from that change over. Before you started doing your own oil changes, what oil did the lube centers use?

For a car 12-years old with those mile, I don't think the varnish looks that bad.

IMHO the Lucas UCL is a waste of money. If you want to put something in the fuel tank every once in a while, use either Chevron Techron or GUMOUT Regane.
