pennzoil Platinum vs Mobil 1

Pennzoil claims that PP clean pistons up to 8% better than Mobil 1.

How that claim equates to empirical evidence in the public forum or observable results remains to be seen.

I think cleaning better arguement is meaningless considering M1 being A5/B5 rated vs. PP only A1/B1.. I would believe ACEA ratings more than unconfirmed marketing phrases

With Mobil as with others the weight decides the ACEA ratings. the Mobil 5-20 is A1/B1 cleaning ability it appears the same from BITOG

MOTOR AGE Wire Reports
August 23rd, 2012

"Using the industry-standard measurement for piston cleanliness, the Sequence IIIG test for weighted piston deposits, Pennzoil Ultra and Pennzoil Platinum were tested against the leading synthetic motor oils in the marketplace. The Sequence IIIG procedure measures oil thickening and piston deposits during high-temperature conditions, inspecting pistons for deposits and varnish following the testing. Following the testing, the oil is scored on the level of piston deposit with a minimum rating of 4.0 required to pass; the higher the rating, the better the piston cleanliness.

The Pennzoil team hired an outside firm to purchase competitive test oils and the oils were then blind coded and randomized and sent to an independent test laboratory for Sequence IIIG testing. Multiple tests were completed on the oils and then assessed at the 95 percent confidence level. After the grueling 100 hour test, Pennzoil Ultra and Pennzoil Platinum exceeded the minimum rating, as well as the competitors’ ratings."

PP 30 wt is A1/B1 only too

M1 5W-30 A1/B1, A5/B5
PP 5W-30 A1/B1 only

Basically,M1 and PP are cleaning the pistons all the time? What if you were to use either one once, will it clean the pistons enough? Can you use either to just clean enough to then use a good conventional oil?

Why just use Mobil once then go back to an oil spec that led to the need to use mobil to clean the engine up again.

I can't see any reason to not just use a better oil.

The savings per year with using conventional/mineral oils is so insignificant that it is irrelevant.

If you then consider the money saved per OCI. Maybe $10/20?

So that is about $3/6 saved per thousand miles on a 3k mile OCI.

I would think it better to just use the better oil?

One interesting thing is the number of cars considered sludgers in US. Only really the Saab turbos are considered sludgers in Europe.

Note I only co.sider a car a sludger if it does so whilst being maintained correctly.

Saabs sludged when oil.was left in too long and oil.specs where not high enough from factory.

Saab specialists in the UK started doing short OCI and using Full Synth only when main dealers were still fixing engines under warranty.

I can understand why some prefer using dino/mineral/conventional. I just don't understand using it to save a couple of bucks hat would be equally saved by emptying the cars boot and saving the money in fuel.

But then people.in the US probably.wonder why Europeans pay $10 for a gallon of petrol/diesel.
