Pennzoil Platinum & LowTemp. Pour Point

Which is stated to be -45C/-49F for the 5w30. While I've read here that PP is believed to be Group III, does not such a low temp pour point indicate the presence of at least a margin of PAO or POEs in the base oil?

Is it a Group III/IV blend?

I've thought for a long time that PP includes some ester content, especially after seeing their claims about PP removing some sludge. I think it's more of a III/V blend but not that much ester. I "base" this on no actual facts, though.

Additives can also lower the pour point.

It's done more with additives and some of those additives have esters in them. I do not know for sure, but I do not think it is a mix of Group III/V base stocks. Shell just happens to make a highly refined Group III, one of the best on the market.

Really anything below 40 C will mean it is nearly un-drivable anyway because the rest of the fluids might not flow.

Now if the question is wax content of the PP base, I'd be curious to see the answer to that.

Only if you don't have the coolant mixed properly and don't have the other lubricants switched to synthetic too. I've never really understood why anyone would use synthetic in the engine, but nowhere else.

It's kinda like waring a track suit with brogues.

Barring public service or the military, I seriously doubt that anyone short of those that absolutely HAVE to would be out on a -40 day.

At my house we wouldn't be gathered 'round the fireplace; we'd be IN it!!!

You know what is neat about -40? Take a warm glass of water outside and throw it up in the air. It will make a cool cruching sound, turn to ice crystals and blow away.

This is why I need a new laptop. My - doesn't always work.
