Pennzoil Platinum Cold Weather Performance

Here is some interesting data from Pennzoil data sheets showing how MRV and CCS has worsened with the switch to a Group III base oil. Also include are numbers from Pennzoil Conventional.

Platinum 5w30 Group V (PDS dated Jan 2005):
MRV, at -35 degC: 6600
CCS, at -30 degC: 4410
Pour Point, degC: -45


Platinum 5w30 Group III (PDS dated July 2006):
MRV, at -35 degC: 14,800
CCS, at -30 degC: 5150
Pour Point, degC: -39


Pennzoil 5w30 Conventional (PDS dated Mar 2006):
MRV, at -35 degC: 25,100
CCS, at -30 degC: 5800
Pour Point, degC: -36

Remind me the day prior to - any 40 below temps arriving around the City Of Detroit.

Supposedly, the pour points worsened because too many of those clinging molecules are inside every quart jug & 5 quart container of the "New & Improved Platinum.

Agree with Triple Se7en. At that temp the car is in the garage and to heck with it. I'm adding vodka to the blood stream to stay warm.

I agree with both Triple & Johnny on this one!

Motor oils tend to double in viscsoity for every 5 degrees C, just prior to the xW rating.

So at -25C, Pennzoil Platinum would be about 2205 cP (old data sheet) and 2575 (new data sheet) which is a differential of 370 cP.

Point is, in very cold temperatures, your engine will be noisey on any 5w30 oil over 2,000 cP, regardless of what it spec's out to at -30C

Maybe you can get this stuff:
Shell Rotella T SB 0w30. pour point -51C.

Thanks for compiling the data. Nice example of the advantages of "true" synthetics at extreme temperatures.

Last winter I had the PP Group V 5w30 in my Subaru. We had one morning around -20 degF (-29 degC), and I did not experience any abnormal noises on startup.

Why doesn't EOM publish CCS and MRV specs for M1? Part of their secrecy policy?

They use to. When they stopped, I suspect it's when they started moving to Group IIIs.
