Just got a jug of 10w30 of the new bottled PPP HM 10w30 for the Z based on a fellow 300zxer's review, but I did see that my local WalMart has several 0w40 Euro jugs available. Wouldn't that be a better option for my Nissan 300ZX?

Maybe even my 1998 5.9 Grand Cherokee?

To be honest, I think it's the marketing that makes me want the 0w40 Euro spec more than anything. LOL

Yeah,I'm the same exact way. Nissan even to date says not to go below a 10W in the 300ZX. I'd stick with a 10W-20W. All the 0W and 5W uoa's I've seen on our cars always show higher iron.

I could only remember aquarius LOL
After your review of the 10w30 HM, I went out and got some to replace the Mobil1 10w40/Lucas oil stabilizer blend, which is apparently [censored] nowadays lol

I just wanted to say I did a Google search for a car like yours and... That's a AWESOME car

But many try to. GEZ

Why would you use a 10W-30 or 40 with today's oils? The Z32 specifies a 10W-30 or 40 and specifically states to only use a 5W if it is cold. But it also specifies an API SG oil. With our SN oils, why continue to use a 10W? Let's use M1 0W-30 or 40 as an example here. You can feel free to insert your favorite brand as well. As a 0W, it will flow faster and provide better start up protection and once it's warm, it's a 30 or 40 just like Nissan specifies.

What does using a 10W-30 do for you that a 0W-30 doesn't?

As you can see in my sig, I drank the 0W cool-aide. I am honestly just curious why 10W is still being used.

Somewhere there's a Nissan TSB from a couple of years ago that says "5W30 for all Nissan vehicles except 300ZX (with an asterisk that said *see owner's manual*). Same thing with the S2000. Honda's current lube chart still says to use 10W30.

I see you mentioned this here:

440Magnum was also getting to my point above about Nissan recommending SG oils.

"Some automakers used to advise against wide viscosity spread oils because back then it took a lot of VII polymers to get there. Today with synthetic base stocks that have quite high native viscosity indices (and low pour points), blenders can do much wider spreads for the same or even less VII and pour-point depressants.

So while there might not be a big advantage to using 0w40 or 5w40 in place of a 10w40, there's no practical DISadvantage apart from cost. Furthermore, the wider spread oil may actually start out with a better base stock than the narrower spread oil."

I would bet the TSB from 1994 related to this since the capacity is 3 5/8 quarts on a 24 valve V6 that could also have twin turbo's on a 90's API SG rated oil.

Back to this thread:

I would rather my buddy ran a 5 or 0W to get oil moving to the turbo's faster but I am torn. One side says that he can get a 10W-30 or 40 Redline or Amsoil and play it safe but would need to order it. But the other side says to go with M1 0W-40 and buy it at Walmart and provide better start up protection to those turbo's. Nissan may have said to use a 10W, but they also said to use an SG.

Ugh, I am still torn.

^^Haha so many oils,so little time!

Heck,if Pennzoil made a Platinum monograde 30,I'd be all over it!

One of my favorite cars ever made. Nissan V6 engines tend to prefer thicker oils from what I gather. The VQ for example tends to do well on GC 0W-30 and M1 0W-40, if memory serves. The VG in your 300ZX is one tough engine. I think you'd be fine with a 10W-30, though. I'm really enjoying the way the Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Synthetic is working out in my high mileage Accord. It cut my consumption almost in half.

Holy moly, over half a million miles on that accord?

0w40 would work great in both.

Another good candidate would be Rotella T5 10w30, which is somewhat cheaper than 0w40, has a rebate available at the moment and just a tad thinner than a 0w40.

I'd agree with that. There are still few times I'd use a North American style 10w-40 (i.e. non A3/B4). There is precious little the grade can do that a 10w-30 HDEO or 15w-40 can't do, and to be honest, I have a lot more faith in the latter two.
