Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 3.5k mi; Honda Civic 1.5l 56k mi

Hello

This is my first oil analysis. I got it for my son's car, which has 56,000 miles and is a 2019 Honda Civic with a 1.5l turbo. 90% of the trips are very short (1-5 miles).

They are scaring me with the fuel dilution, but I am unsure about the other information in the report.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

A little more info. This is from Amzoil/Horizon/Oil Analyzers. Always gotten full synthetic oil changes. He is away at college, so he usually gets them at a lube place (jiffy using platinum or valvoline). We live in South Carolina, so it is very warm most of the year.

Wear metals are low, so that's good. High fuel. Nothing new with the 1.5T. Some people like to move to 0/5W - 30 to offset that. I'm thinking about it for my car. I also short trip most of the time, and the oil always smells strongly of fuel when changing. Viscosity showing 7.5, so it's not horrible.

I’d either run a 0w30/5w30 or a more stout 0w20 to combat the fuel dilution. Or, if you can get him to take a 30-45 minute trip on an interstate going 70 mph, once a week, that would probably reduce dilution.

It looks like it thinned down to between a 0w20 and 0w16. cSt on 0w20 PP is 8.6.

The additive package on PP is pretty weak in comparison to some others and the TBN is getting pretty low. But, like always, UOA doesn’t show everything.

Wear metals look good. 4.3% fuel is probably below average for those engines. I wouldn't worry about it.

TBN is getting pretty low at only 3.5k miles. For longer OCIs, I'd use PUP 0W-20. It's slightly thicker and has a higher TBN.

Short trip or not, there will be fuel. Mine wreaks in less than a week after OC, and I'm up a healthy climb to get home, thing gets a 10+ mi commute with frequent 60mi one way trips. Nothing helps those 1.5s IME.

With that fuel I'd opt for a 30 grade. This was a shorter run so it looks ok otherwise.

was the Civic ever serviced at a Honda dealer?

I can't remember off the top of my head....if 2019 models had the software update that made the engine hold revs a bit higher to help burn off residual fuel.

thank you all so much for your insight. I think I’m going to start having him buy oil/filter and take it to a mechanic near his college for oil changes.

What oil would you all suggest for this car?

I also think this year car was not part of the update to make the engine idle a little higher.
