I’m curious about the Pennzoil Oil Selector, if I input my 2008 Toyota Avalon, spec’d for 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra 5W20 is recommended. If I input my 2008 GMC Acadia spec’d for 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 is recommended. I would have guessed Ultra would have been recommended for everything, or at least the same oil would have been recommended. Can anyone provide insight into how this oil selector works?

they probably recommend ultra only for premium cars. the same happens here: i entered my acura rsx - shows platinum, entered TSX just to see what they recommend and it says ultra.

I'm a Pennzoil guy but after using the selector a few times, I think it's very, very flawed. I generally research the OEM specs and make my oil type selection based on that. Since there's only a $1.50 difference between Platinum and Ultra at Wal-Mart, you might as well get the premium product, which would be Ultra.

It could be because Platinum is Dexos approved so that was recommended on the GM product. As for the other one, ummm.......yeah.

I noticed similar odd results from the Pennzoil oil selector tool about a month ago and posted here. Platinum was recommended for one of my vehicles, Ultra for the other. Neither has what I'd call a "premium" engine. Just a regular Honda 3.5l V6 and a Nissan 2.5l I4.
