Pennzoil jelly true story!! with Fram

Well it is time to share my story. My Monte Carlo was bought new by my grandfather in 74. He only used Pennzoil and Fram (ph30) filters.The oil was changed every 2000 miles and before winter storage. Than in spring he would change it again before driving the car with 0 miles on the oil. He used 10W-30 in spring and fall. And 10W-40in summer, the Monte was NEVER driven in winter. My father bought the Monte in 87 and I bought it in 99 It continued to get only Pennzoil. In 2001 at 110,000 miles I replaced the heads and intake with hi performance parts (2.02 bowtie heads and a edelbrock manifold with a 4BBL).when I opened the engine I was amazed how clean it was no sludge, no carbon. nothing! It was spotless. I was expecting to have to dig out slime to find the head bolts. But that was not what I have found. This should clear up that darn Pennzoil jelly legend.

I still have the Monte and it runs better than ever. Some day I will give it to my son.

One more thing. The bottom end has never ben touched and it uses no oil.

Lol i was expecting to get to the point where you said the engine was full of sludge. That's awesome though, im glad it worked out for you. Was this yellow bottle by chance?

I don't know why people buy into that myth.

I'm still waiting on my truck to seize from Pennzoil wax build up. I'll take my chances.

Im not saying pennzoil today has problems but perhaps back in the pre 70s pennzoil did infact cause problems.

He still uses Pennzoil and fram on his 09 Buick with a 2000 mile OCI.

It would be yellow bottle since Pennzoil has been used since 74, it might even be yellow can before it came in bottles...lol

the problem is... when the motor seizes, you wont know what to blame: the melted crayons in the yellow bottle or the orange cans of death!!!

certainly I am kidding in all regards.

Back when that Monte was new 2000 miles was the standard oil change interval...Old habits die hard...gramps has stuck to what he knows works.

It never did for me. Thats I used in the 60s and 70s.

It was the owners who had problems! The only reason that we don't have more sludged engines now, is that oil has made many advances! WE change and maintain our cars, but if you look at people in general, a vehicle is lucky to get 5-6 changes in it's lifetime on dino.

true,but some of the oil formula`s back then were not what they could have been either.so it wasnt a good combination.
