This is probably the wrong forum, but... I was at AutoZone and picked up a bunch of $2 synthetic oil. As I was finishing my shopping, I noticed a lone quart of Pennzoil Euro AV 5w30 and grabbed it as well. When I got home, I noticed that it says "SPECIALLY FORMULATED FOR EUROPEAN DIESEL VEHICLES". It is API SN, ACEA C3, and VW 502.00/505.00/505.01.

I'm assuming all I need to worry about is that it's SN rated for my gas engines?

You should probably post more details like the specific car that you have. It may or may not care about that spec. I did see some of that oil and it didn't meet the specs that my Euro car requires so I passed.

Its semisyn hydrocracked grp. III synthetic...

Nothing to worry about for your gasser....

Acea C3 has hths rating of 3.5 min

It may be appropriate, it may be inappropriate. We need to know the vehicle type and what spec if calls for. If you need an A3/B4 oil, you haven't got the ideal choice. The same applies if you need SN/GF-5. If you need ordinary SN (i.e. my G37 calls for SM or better, with the ILSAC part being optional), then you're good to go.

It'll have a bit higher HTHS, and would be great for outdoor power equipment, given that you only have one quart of it. Throw it in the mower or snowblower and it's probably better than anything it saw before.

That's what I was thinking actually... I'll use it in my mower for the next change. I don't have a car that specs anything special.

Thanks for the feedback.

Read my shell link... It meets acea A3

Which isn't A3/B4...

Clearly, I don't know the difference.

Also, don't assume I didn't read what you posted.

Still odd though IMO because it is a diesel oil..

Acea C3 is diesel spec....here in EU it is also common to meet vw 504/507 (more tougher then just C3) but dont know wich parameter is not sufficient to achieve vw standard (noack or ash)

505.01 is mid saps for (diesel) vw PD engines also...

It is decent oil for your gasser anyway

Better then any american API

Shell could stand to learn something from Castrol in this regard, too - naming products. Euro AV is a rather enigmatic name, and tossing VW Diesel onto the sell sheet description doesn't help.

Castrol calls the 5w30 Edge options here 5w30 U.S. (with the black and gold differentiation), 5w30 A3/B4, and 5w30 C3/dexos2. That way, whether I'm looking at the bottle or placing a product order, I know exactly what I'm getting. I don't have to dig up product sheets to figure out what AV and L and other things might mean.
