I have a 97 Civic that I put the Conventional YB, 5w30 in, the current mileage on the oil is 3,900 -- is the YB good for 5,000 miles or should I change it out?

It's certainly fine until 5,000 on a clean engine.
Depends on your driving style and the engine condition. If you normally drive at least 10 miles per trip and the engine is clean (as seen through the oil filler), then Pennzoil Conventional is good for 5000 miles or longer. Otherwise, I'd change it every 3000 miles.
On a D16/D17 Civic? 5000 in almost any condition. If you do a lot of highway you can easily to 7500, possibly 10,000.
At the end of the D series, the Honda recommendation was 11,000 mile OCI's, on conventional, with a filter every other time.

95% of my trips are over 50 miles, just about all freeway, the car has 120k miles and I have used either Mobil 1 syn or Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic for the majority of the miles.

Weather in Irvine, CA is very mild, with most trips over 50 miles and mostly highway you can use any conventional to 6-7k miles, you may be able to extend OCI to 9-10k miles if you do UOA at around 6-7k miles to see if if the oil is still good for 10k miles OCI.

I would do 7.5k/6months as the norm, I wouldn't push any further than that unless you do used oil analysis. Pennzoil Conventional is a very stout conventional oil, it can easily handle 7.5k in a d16

IMO....with Pennzoil Conventional in the sump for 5K you will have a very clean engine at the end of the OCI based on your driving style and prior use of oils. If the oil starts to look dirty.....don't worry.....it's just Pennzoil Conventional doing its job.

The manual says for severe service, 3750 miles; non-severe 7500 miles.
Based on the advice, I believe 5k is safe to do. My past used oil analysis on the vehicle, using both PP & M1, were excellent. The engine is really in a great condition.

Three different delivery vehicles, used where I work, all go 5000 to 6000+ on bulk Pennzoil and have no problems at all. Oil is changed about every 30 to 45 days and vehicle mileage ranges from 170,000 to 280,000 miles. One is a Honda Fit, no problem at all.

That is impressive, I am really feeling comfortable now.
Pennzoil Conventional is a very high quality oil, and better than anything that was on the market when Honda wrote your manual.
I would follow the normal service recommendation in the manual and change it at 7500.

I'd try to go 6 months with it, but if it started getting too dark, I'd change it out.
Getting one UOA done at 5,000 with Pennzoil Conventional in there would be interesting. A modest investment for peace of mind and you can see how the engine is looking in air filtration/contaminants?/TBN/insols or soot, etc.
Anyone performing intervals beyond 5,000 miles consistently; OR who are trying to track a problem, should get at least 1 or 2 used oil analysis performed on that particle app.
Of course, people that like getting used oil analysis performed as a hobby or OCD issue don't count.

I have some PP but I thought I would use the Pennzoil Conventional in my car since it only gets driven around 1K miles a year... Why waste the PP. LOL.
