Pennzoil 5w-20 2021 Ram 5.7 Hemi

Really? What is the 5.7 in? Guys in the 5.7 trucks have run everything from 0w-20 to 5w-30 and 0w-40, they've never got a single code and MDS still works just as it always does. Redline 5w-30 is often recommended and it's pretty much a 40 weight from what I understand.

Code's notwithstanding, I believe there is more swing in viscosity from a 5w-20 from -20F cold start in winter to 250F pulling a trailer up a hill, than there is going from 0w-20 to 0w-40 at any single temperature. So in terms of actual harm to the engine, there can't be any.
It's in a 2014 5.7 300C. The code does not illuminate the MIL .....it just lives there..... on and off depending on the oil I use. I just changed it last week, went from Amsoil 5W-20 back to Ultra platinum 5W-20 so I'll see if it logs the code on PP or not.

My 07 1500 5.7 was a big oil burner. I switched to a 5-30 to help (hopefully) mitigate it. Even that old truck would throw a CEL for incorrect viscosity.

Haven’t toyed with viscosity changes on my newer 5.7s. Had 140k hard miles on my 2010 and 5-20 synthetic with no issues. Engine was great but the rest of the truck was a dumpster fire.

The old 2500 5.7s up until they stopped offering it specified 5-30 iirc and I betcha there was no change to the pumps/bottom end vs a 1500. MDS was not available on the 5.7 in the HD truck though.

That’s a nice low iron reading for a 5.7 that early in its life. My first OCI with my current truck was 48 ppm iron. That was a 7500 mile interval with 10k miles on the clock after I changed the factory fill at 2500 miles. Pennzoil platinum 5-20/Mopar filter.

I had an 07 1500 that was in great shape and low mileage but it was a major oil burner. With synthetic 5-20 it would consume close to a quart per 1000 miles. Ended up reducing it down with pennzoil yellow bottle conventional 5-30. Even on that older model it would still throw codes and a CEL for incorrect viscosity.

I’ve never tried switching viscosity in my 2010 or 2021. Sticking at 5-20 and Mopar filters until my powertrain warranty expires.
