Pennys! Let's be Rid of the Pesky Things!

What do you think? Aren't pennys a pain in the keester?

Consider that when the first penny was minted, it probably bought more value than a dollar does today. So what is the point in continuing to have pennys in circulation? Think of the wasted money for the government to continue minting the things and banks and stores having to fool with the things. I think they should quit making pennys.

Coins in general annoy me... unless they are silver or gold!

I use my debit card or charge card for 99% of my purchases. I hate paying with cash just because I don't want to deal with the change.

While I completely agree, you are ALWAYS going to have those people who complain about being shorted (a maximum of) four cents in their change. In Canada we have coins for $0.01, $0.05, $0.10, $0.25, $1.00 and $2.00...our smallest bill is $5.00, it's a bit ridiculous.

A store at the beach nearby has done away with pennys. They round up or down to the nearest nickel.

A more logical thing to do would be to automatically donate any pennies that someone would normally get in their change to a charity of sorts. If anybody makes a big fuss out of it, then the store can keep some pennies on hand and give them to the customer. All it is is a waste of metal.

What a great idea. If we all did that, we would eliminate the penny by lack of use.

If you poll the public, they still want pennies. I'm guessing it's a sentimental (and maybe American) thing.

I'd like to see the penny and nickel disappear. We'll do fine with dimes and quarters.

I like the way Canada does it. There is no mistaking their coins like the "Jimmy Carter Quarter" of the 1970's. The $2 coin is big and silver w/another gold color coin inside, the dollar is gold colored. The quarter, dime, nickel and penny look like ours. I agree, the penny is a PITA more than anything.

If I park downtown it costs 25 cents for three minutes. I need at least 10 minutes. We can do away with all coins worth less than $1.

I agree with the premise of stores rounding to the nearest nickel. The gov't should make this allowable under legal tender laws, perhaps with a warning on the front door that that's how it works.

People could still spend five pennies, but they wouldn't get any in change. Pennies deposited to banks would disappear from circulation.

The average pre-82 copper penny is worth 2.2 cents in copper, but the energy required to melt it would not be worthwhile.

It's a good idea. Many young people don't know how to make change or count it back to you. On a recent purchase I gave the cashier a twenty, a dime a nickel and a penny for a purchase amount of $10.16. The girl gave me back the change and said, "Like the twenty will like totally cover it and you know like you don't like need the change, Mister", and gave me a blank stare. I asked her if she know how to make change and she called her manager. He saw what was happening and gave me a ten dollar bill and thanked me for shopping at Wall Mart. She punched $20.16 into the cash register and was surprised that the manager knew that the display would show $10.00. She was absolutely baffled. Getting rid of change would be a big help for this cashier.

Well, one byproduct is that you can send even more scrap metal off shore ..and then buy it back at value added prices ..and then throw it away again ...repeat until you're left with only paper ...and then you can roll it up and hang it on the bathroom wall near your toilet.

It was a hard sell in Oz to get rid of 1s and 2s.

When you buy something, what ends in 1, 2 rounds down. 3, 4 rounds up.

Pay by EFTPOS or CC, and you pay exact.

One enterprising homeless person was living on button mushrooms that he purchased individually for a while.

keep 'em. On principle alone. If my purchase costs me 1.24, the store (Timmy's) isn't going to give me my goods if I hand over 1.23. If they round up, I AM getting cheated out of my penny. That penny adds up when you sidle up to the coffee counter (yeah, I know, getting a coffee somewhere is cheating me out of a lot more than a penny) regularly.

Any coins over 25c is a pain. Bring back one and two dollar bill (For us Canucks).

How about the fuel you burn + wear and tear on your vehicle driving to Tim Hortons/going through the drive-thru...and you're concerned about a penny?
