Was the engine cold? I've had better results pulling the valve from warm (not hot) engines.

As I recall, the engine was warm when I attempted to remove the pcv. I still have the new pcv. When warm weather gets here, I will make another attempt.

I hear ya, its a major PITA to get to without removing the wiper tray. I also thought about removing the valve cover to attack it from the bottom...I read that there is a baffle under the PCV hole so you can not push it out! If I can get my wiper arms off this spring I will go the wiper-tray-removal route.
