Wife and I are thinking about getting a laptop that we can use to replace our older 2nd desktop and at the same time have something we can take on trips for checking e-mail and such.

The Toshiba laptop we are looking at has a 15.6 inch screen and an RGB port rather than a VGA port. For use at home could we buy an inexpensive but bigger monitor with the standard VGA port and hook the laptop RGB to the monitor VGA? I know they are both the 15 pin ports, so I guess my question is will it work the same as if the laptop had a VGA port. Thanks...

Why not go for a laptop with an HDMI cable so you can hook it up to your TV? Thats of you got an HDTV. Just another possibility or choice

a link to this laptop please?

FYI. I know HDMI is the best way to go (I use HDMI on my new Dell PC monitor), but we chose this one because the price is right for what we want/need and HDMI capable laptops are usually much more expensive.

If you look at the photos, it has both a VGA as well as an HDMI output.

Here is a 13.3" (smaller) laptop with HDMI output and a ULV Core i3 processor for $400 at the time of writing this:

Hmm. I actually went to the Toshiba website and they show RGB port under features but no mention of VGA or HDMI. However, when looking at the images from the right side I seem something that shape wise sure looks an HDMI port. If nothing else I can call Toshiba or maybe Wally World will have this model in stock where I can look at it.

If you look at the pictures, as others have noted, it has VGA and HDMI. They are probably referring to VGA as RGB.

That's true. It's more like a netbook from a performance perspective. Alas, if he just needs it to check e-mail, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Here's a 17" laptop that might work for you since you want a desktop replacement: lenovo G780 laptop. With the 17" screen you may not even need to hook it up to a second monitor. Of course, a 17" laptop might not be a good choice if you're taking frequent trips and don't want to lug it around.

yea thats why i wanted a link.

the actual picture shows hdmi and vga

The G780 looks interesting especially at the NewEgg price. I found a lenovo 15.6 inch with HDMI port at Best Buy for $329, but will also check out the G780. Thanks..
