PC gamers, what hardware do you need to play Doom 3?

I bought a new el cheapo custom box with a gig of pc3200 ram, AMD sempron 3100+ chip, and a Geforce 256mb FX5500 video card. Even on the lower game settings, Doom 3 plays choppy. I've heard that while you can play this game with even a lessor video card then what I have, this game needs about the best thats out there. Is the video card the culprit? Or does this game require a super fast speed pc chip?

your video card is the problem, would get a geforce 6600 or 6800 gt, 6800 ultra, or radeon 9600-9800xt or x700-850xt

Both cpu and video card needs to be upgraded. Upgrading just the video card will help, but soon the cpu becomes the bottleneck. My guess is, even with GF 6800 ultra, your AMD sempron will be only good for doom3 playing at 1024x768x32bit around 30fps. You need 90fps for a smooth gameplay.

I run an Athlon64 +3200 with a gig of ram, and a 6800GT vidcard. Works great for D3, HL2, and Far Cry.

 

[Virtuoso]

Overclock that video card.
