Partial trans fluid exchange, caveman style

I’m curious how you move by yourself. Drive one down, fly back I guess, and take another vehicle and trailer?

I remember you saying you have a lot of tools/garage stuff. I can’t imagine it all fits in 4 trailers with a house full of normal stuff.

How many vehicles and trailers do you now own? Good on you for tackling this yourself, I hate moving and believe I’m 15-20 years younger than you.

Nope, unlike the GMs there is nothing available for the Fords as far as adding a dipstick to the 10r140 that I’m aware of.
I went and watched fordtechmakuloco do the fluid/filter on one...I'll stick to my 4R100 that has a drain plug in the pan, drain plug in the torque converter and a dipstick tube to refill...I mean, *** were they thinking.

Tell me about it, just had my 2020 rebuilt.
Well...if you followed my story I traded my 2020 F150 w/the ten speed for a Silverado. Lost substantial money on the transaction.

How is your transmission now?

Celina 52 Truck Stop approves of the ad hoc oil container.

Also, I think transmissions running at 200 degrees is typical now but i'm no Ford expert.

Ford runs their transmission hotter then the GM version. I pulled a 5,000 pound travel trailer up to Leadville, Colorado up a 9,000 foot pass at 90 degrees ambient temperature and the transmission never exceeded 180 degrees-in my 2023 Silverado. It runs around 165 to 170 around town.

All of my Hondas even this one a 21 HRV with a CVT it is easy to do.. You have a drain plug and a fill plug...Takes very little time to do a fluid change...I do one every 25 to 30000 miles..

Did you get a job at Area 51?
Actually tentatively heading to the White Sands NM area. Having a little fun with Groom Lake, seeing if anyone knew what Groom Lake was. I don't have employment yet, but hopefully some things being worked.

You could have told me Mars and I would not have doubted it.

Better than when it was new now. I think I have 2000miles on it since rebuild.

Heading to the desert South with my trucks and trailers. The 2015 f350 has been shifting hard once while cold. The truck trans also is getting up to 203 degrees running 75 mph not under load.

Decided I didn't have time to do a full filter and flush. But I did have a new container of liquimoly toptech1800 fluid. So off to Walmart and purchased a catch container, cheap funnel, and two one-gallon pitchers for measurements. Only tool k I need was a 13mm wrench.

Everything worked flawlessly. So easy a caveman can do this on a gravel parking lot at dusk.

If you drink that I'll bet it comes out the same color...

My ‘21 didn’t but it does now. One of GM’s dumber ideas.

How does it shift now Mr. GON?
AZJ,

Just completed a 1700 mile run with the TopTech 1800 fluid (eight quarts used), crossed mountains in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico. Also crossed mountains in Colorado, but the mountains in Colorado are small and not part of the equation. The weight of the truck and trailer was 16,220 lbs. The truck without the bed full of cargo and trailer weighs 7520 lbs .

Very happy with the TopTech 1800 synthetic LV ATF fluid. I was having shift issues and such with the old factory fill and bed empty and no trailer. With the TopTech, I ran in very hard terrain, engine up to 6200 RPM, and zero transmission issues upshifting or downshifting. The TopTech didn't appear to lower the trans temperature over the factory fill.

I buy the "monster" size container of TopTech 1800 from RockAuto.

How many miles did you log today? @GON
Left late Friday afternoon, 1700 miles. Also unloaded the truck into a storage locker at 103 degrees.

On a plane now back to Seattle to go load and grab another truck and trailer for the same run.

I slept in the truck both nights. Trick to sleeping in a pickup is to spend large on the Walmart pillow.

@GON, did you buy a house in Groom Lake?

You have family in CO, right? It looks like Groom Lake is one long day's drive. Do you plan to retire there?

(Edit: It looks like Groom Lake is a military base, so I assume this a stop on the way.)
N35,

We found a home in the White Sands, NM area that met our interim needs. The home is under eight hours to our Grandsons in Denver, and under eight hours to my Wife's family in Phoenix.

We are 60 years old and homeless. Kind of a weird predicament. When we found this home, we thought worse case it would be a seasonable home, but we would always have a place. The home was affordable--- we are prepared to buy another (small) home wherever I land a job.

On a sad note, we were supposed to close on the home 28 AUG 2024. Mortgage guy called with an issue we may not be able to overcome. We can pay cash for the home, but then we won't be able to buy a home where I land a job. Wife is very upset about this. SHe is tired of all the moving and liked to course of action of a permanent home, even if we didn't occupy it year round. And I need to improve on my empathy.....

Yes, I drive a trailer, fly back, grab another. On a plane now to go get another trailer.

Along with the trailers, I usually rent a 26-foot Penske box truck. Trying to avoid the Penske this time. I gave away a Weber Genisis, Trager Smoker, still in the sealed box Kholer pressure washer, and tons of other stuff. I still have a rented RV garage full of stuff I am trying to figure out how to transport.

A lesson I learned after moving every 18 months for 30 years would be to not transport outdoor items like furniture, grills, etc. Give outdoor stuff awat and buy new at fall clearance prices. Grills, outdoor furniture, etc- take up huge demensional space. Our Costco andrioch chairs are massive space consumers. But Wife would kill me if I gave them away.

At eleven motor vehicles with engines and four wheels. Also two motorcycles and four trailers. I am considering numerous gooseneck flatbed trailers to help transport some vehicles, but challenged to find a place to store the four trailers I already own-----be glad you are not my neighbor-- unless you want to borrow a trailer, tools, truck, or a car---- then I am a ok neighbor.
