Pardon if I missed it, and maybe I missed the age of your daughter and son, but have you discussed why you did what you did with them, one on one? I mean not intensely but in the normal way you talk with your kids. IMHO with my kids, the "why" parts of things, things adults do, is something they are looking for.

Sorry to hear of your loss. We likely would have done things very much as you did.

Not to sound harsh, but perhaps your kids will understand when they get older depending on their age. Speaking from experience.
 
You are a good DAD!
You did what was good for your children, while taking the load on yourself.
Now go enjoy all the days coming on with them....Every day passing is a good one.
