This is why I hate high tech. My S2000 has remote door lock but i don't have it on my key chain, I only use the regular key to lock/unlock my car. The E430 has remote door lock built in the key fob, so my wife uses it all the time.

If you own a Volkswagen with keyless entry, it's likely to be vulnerable to a remote-cloning attack, according to new research.

After reverse-engineering the keyless entry systems of multiple VW models from the early 2000s to 2016, a team of researchers believe that the vast majority of the 100 million vehicles from VW Group sold in that time are vulnerable to a key-cloning attack that leaves the ignition and keyless entry system exposed to tampering.

The attack can be carried out using cheap, battery-run commercially-available radios, which are capable of eavesdropping and recording the rolling codes used by keyless entry systems and then emulating a key. One of the tools they developed for the attack, an Aduino-based RF transceiver, cost just $40 to make.

MQB vehicles are fine, so I don't care

Even locked cars are quickly broken into. Key is, don't leave anything valuable, especially in sight, in your car.

hackers can also remotely kill Jeeps, right?

Again, I'm safe.

What happens if your Tesla 3 is vulnerable? Heck Tesla's can almost self-drive!

Plenty of other things to worry about first.

Exactly
Someone breaking into my vehicle is right above me slipping on a banana peel

How do you detect [censored]? Here are some key words to identify:

"a team of researchers believe that the vast majority of "

Three key words in one fragment of a sentence.

My 1996 Nissan has oem keyless entry. I wonder how much earlier than 1996 keyless entry was around?

It was available on the 1989+ BMW 7 series.

I have insurance so I don't worry about this far-fetched stuff.

I love the high-tech stuff.

I've had a side window busted out... because a backseat passenger left her expensive Coach purse in the floor covered up with a big towel. I would have rather left the car unlocked to allow them to open the door and take what they wanted.

Late 80s for Ford, IIRC.
