With those big 20 litre pails of oil would you have to stir the oil up before pumping some out? I cant imagine that an oil that has sat a walmart for a year without moving wouldn't be somewhat different in the top than in the bottom. If you had to stir it that would be a big PITA and I'll stick to buying smaller containers.

Well, the only reason to buy a 5 gallon/20 liter pail of oil is if it's not packaged in quarts (which most 10w-30 HDEOs aren't) ..or you use a whole lot of it ..often.

Although I'm sure that it's happened with older oils ...I can't recall having anything sit in the bottom of any bottles that I've had sitting for over a year

If I had to buy a pail of oil, I would save up empty gallon oil jugs and repackage it.

If you are near to Windsor, you could come over to the Detroit suburbs and stock up on Motorcraft heavy duty engine oil in 10w30 in quart bottles at Murrays Auto for $2.39 a quart.

Have you ever seen instructions on a quart of oil that says to shake before use? NO

You don't have to mix oil like you would paint.

Buy it by the 5 gal size if thats how much you would use in a year but don't buy that size just to save $$.

As for repackaging it in other containers, thats silly. Why not buy it in that size to start with? Repackaging it, you can introduce contaiminates and moisture into the oil. Have you ever tried to pour from a 5 gal pail, I have and it can get messy. You have to buy a pump to get is out ww/o wasting oil. I have several customers who buy gear lube in 5 gal pails for servicing big trucks and use a hand pump to dispense it and use about 10 pails per year.

I recomend that you do SHAKE it up. GM dealers are requested to purchase their oil in smaller containers than the 55 gal? drums. The reason is that GM determined that oil additives will separate out over time. I read this on this or another NG and was posted by a GM technician.

I was wanting to get a big pail of hdeo for my brother and I's quads. I only wanted the pail so I could say I have a giant pail of oil at home. I guess 4L jugs will have to do.

Are pails of oils cheaper?... where can we get them? This is a good idea for those of us that keep a stash. A pail of 5W-40 synthetic and of any brand name 5w30 dino would be about right for me.

Yep, I guess there is a possibility that aditive packages might separate out over a period of time, depending on the blendor and the formulations. However, a shop doing 3 or 4 oil changes a day (which isn't a heck of a lot) will go through a 55 gal drum in about 10 days. I doubt the bottom will be covered in an inch of additives.

Pails are usually a bit less expensive, since bottles cost money. Most shops use bulk because of the convenience. I have some shops which could easily use bulk, but prefer to use qts and gallons because of inventory control.

Some time ago I contacted Vesco, a local distributor of Mobil products. They sell oil by the case, not pail, and their oil was more expensive per quart than what I pay at the local Murrays.
