I am buying over 10 Wolverine Heat Pads on great bulk pricing, 4 of which for my use half on oil pans and auto trannys. Friends getting the rest.

RUST: I am told these peel and sticks heaters can cost rust, some say to use a full 1/16th layer of red RTV auto silicone over entire sticky surface, makes sense but doesn't that hinder the adheasive from working? Also my nissan has a checkered style grooved oil and tranny pan, will pads work?

Oil add pack depletion: Some also advocate that the heat pads can cause oil pack depletion because the oil heats without circulation. Is this true?

In a Group 1V POA syn oil like XD3 0-30 or 0-40, is add pack depletion a problem? To date without answers I only speculate what is the greater evil, hard start with mollases oil or easy start with bit less add pack?

Please help, these subjects get touched on, with winter coming, much appreciate some imput, I believe many will be installing heat pads on pans this fall.

thanks,
Cyprs

I'm not a very good mechanic, or very smart, I think you should move south before winter

The pads I use do not have an adhesive backing. I use Permatex Ultra Copper high temp RTV silicone gasket maker. Holds the pads without rusting the pan.

I'm with Harvey, but I would recommend that if you are worried about the oil ad pack, simply change it more often. Cold stiff non-flowing oil is always worse.

spreading a bunch of RTV will also impede the heat from getting to the surface. The RTV, if you decide to use it, will act as the adhesive, but you'll need to duct tape it in place while it cures.
