As you know I have been struggling with P1300 for while, but yesterday I started my car and got the code P0300 (multiple/random misfire) with a blinking CEL. I know the blinking light is bad, indicating misfired that can damage the cat converter, but it went off after about 30 secs. Was fine today, but pulled the plugs to see if anything was wrong...plugs looked perfect. Car runs fine, CEL comes on randomly usually if you start it a 2nd time after starting it when cold. I think the car is possessed.

I can get the diag flow chart with the year and model if it is a toyota. I can also ask my dad, as he is a Toyota MDT with 30 years experience.

Justin C, that would be great! I have the Toyota manual but it is the wrong year (98) and that year has a different ignition system, mine is a 97 Toyota Avalon with the waste-spark ignition. I have been looking all over for a diag flow chart for a 97, but came up empty. You can email it to me at [email protected] AND if you could ask your dad, thatd be great. So far I have replaced: spark plugs, wires, ignitor, coils, cam position sensor, and the code still exists. Symptoms are intermittent hard starting, especially when cold. Code comes on, then disappears for a few days, then comes back. All the wiring looks good, I pulled out the computer connector to look at the connectors, they are gold plated and look good as new. Ignitor harness looks to be good as well.

Dirty injectors can cause a misfire. But I agree with whoever said the P1300 code is probably setting the misfire code.

As far as bad gas, the problem has been intermittent for the better part of 3 years. I have tried using a fuel system cleaner, and while i have noticed a performance increase, the light stays on.

Does your car have a fuel pressure regulator or a fuel pump that varies the pressure based on signals from the ECM?

This could be your problem.

What fuel pressure do you get at the fuel rail at idle and at 2K RPM?

P0300 has gone away it seems. P1300 is still there. SteveC, according to the Toy manual, P1300 can't be caused by a fuel related problem...only ignition

If I remember correctly, there was a TSB for bad injectors on early sienna's that exhibited these codes.
As you may know the sienna had the same engine as the avalon.
Let me look to see if there is a tsb.

The distributor itself is usually the culprit. The pick coils inside the assembly shorts out.

Yes but it could think it is a spark misfire when it's a fuel supply problem causing the misfire. It is possible to have the wrong code stored. I have seen this on a few GM vehicles.

Oh...OK that is interesting, as the car does smell like its running rich (stinks of gas!) as does the oil! Thanks JustinC, it would be great to have this issue resolved before it gets worse. Also the car is distributorless.
